Hi my name is Cassie. I'm having issues in turning on my antivirus on my dell inspiron from 2009; my laptop was working fine until my ex used it. I found out he deleted the windows 7 key which had her running very slow and wouldn't load my login screen then I got her to work again. its been a very slow process and I was wondering if you might be able to tell me why it wont turn on my antivirus but the anti virus still runs as though its turned on?
Have you tried a System Restore to a date before this issue?

Shut down the computer and then hold Fn key and then press the power buttong which will take you to Pre Boot Assesment test so let the test run and if hard drive is failing it will give you an error.If you want to do extended test then once this PSA test is finished it will ask you wether you want to remaining memory test just say yes and after that run the extended test which test the computer components extensivly and by that you can make sure wether hard drive is fine or not.If everything passes then reisntall Operating system or if you want to try to repair then boot from vista dvd (if vista) and then choose option repair.Let me know if further help needed

Sounds like you need a FRESH Install or a NEW HARDRIVE!...Hope you did a BACKUP OF YOUR PERSONAL FILES!...GOOD LUCK

I believed that you already tried your best. However, I have this suggestion, try to reformat your laptop and do it all over. But make sure that you have all your drivers and OS with you!

You could try booting in safe mode and roll back to before you had the problems by using system restore.
Worth a try and a lot quicker than a full re-install.
May not work but it will only take minutes to find out !!!

reinstall the operating system, thats the only thing to do.
Use an External Optical Drive and the Operating system CD. to reinstall the operating system. this is the only option. else you can Download Ubuntu Image from the Dell Support site or ubuntu.com on a second computer, Extract to a USB key, Boot from USB key.
