I have bought a second hand Acer Laptop 5100 and have problems when I watch a dvd or play games. This problem happens and lasts about 1 min, and happens about every 4 - 5 min. I went to task manager when it happens and cpu runs 100% I am running on Windows Vista.
Even though you bought the laptop used, you can try going to www.acer.com and leave a message they may be able to give you more advice.
I am thinking it could be the DVD drive or maybe even a memory issue, not really sure, maybe you need to add more memory, I think Acer will be able to help.
Good Luck.
Ok, if you have the restore and driver DVD's then by all means back up your data like pictures and document and do the restore.
Remember you will lose everything on your drive if you choose to do this, but this still may not resolve your issue.
Do this first, How much memory do you have and how much free space is on your hard drive?
I don't like suggesting to reinstall unless that is the only option.

You have something running in the background that is eating up the CPU useage. You need to identify which process is doing this.
Use the built in task manager, using ctrl-alt-delete to bring it up, and see which process is at above 90% cpu usage. Then post back here what you find.

" Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced. Several items can cause a system to run slow, or perhaps lock up. Over time, as more software and files are installed on a computer it may become slow. A fragmented drive can also cause a computer to run slow. I suggest you scandisk and defrag the drive again. Then go to Internet Explorer under Tools and Internet Options to delete temporary internet files and clear the history. If this does not resolve the issue, I would strongly recommend to back up your data and do full system recovery if you are getting error messages. "
Not even what I asked them
Does this happen with all DVD's, New, Rented, Home made?
