Go to the singer website
Go to the home page
Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example 401a) & click search

Here is an exploded diagram for all the parts in your 401A machine. I have the same machine and needed the same diagram--for the tension assembly.

I also have a German Singer 431G. Haven't been able to find a Service Manual
for it. The guts are probably very similar to the US Singer 401A, you may be able to refer to that.
