SOURCE: hard starting in the morning

it sounds like 1 of two things either your starter relay is gone and you need a new one ,they arnt that expensive or its your hold in winding in the starter motor this is a bit more expensive but can be changed quite easily.

SOURCE: runs for 3-4 min then stalls, wont start until next day.

i would look at those items first by checking battery voltage at fuel pump if car stalls but pump is still getting voltage then i would pull fuel filter back out and check to see if installed correctly also blowing through filter to make sure its not clogged in rare occasions can be defective or if installed backwards if possible can colapse inside should have arrow pointing towards direction of engine if all is well check relay then crankshaft sensor

SOURCE: 1991 Mazda 626 DX dies suddenly after running for 10 minutes.

Hello, It sounds like an engine ignition control module gone out or a coil. They get hot and quit working after a short period of time, cool off then work again till they get hot.
Is the ignition system pointless electronic or does it have points? Are you getting any fire at all now to the cylinders? Does the tach in the vehicle show any RPM's during cranking? Do you have voltage at the positive side of the ignition coil? Does the coil meet the ohm ratings for that years vehicle ignition? Does the vehicle have oil in it so the oil pressure sensor allows the engine to run, this may not be an option on your particular vehicle? You can check most of this out with a volt/ohm meter. Check your voltages before starting the vehicle, during running and after it quits to see where the loss is. Just don't get near the center tap of the coil or you will get a rude awakening and/or serious injury. Good luck, RAC

SOURCE: B 2500 diesel pickup hard start from cold

Hey mate,

I have a Mazda B2200 from 1985, which has the same R2 diesel motor, and I had this same problem, which was exacerbated by the cold of winter....even here in a mild Melbourne.

Each time you turn the ignition on, the QSS (Quick Start System) powers up the glow plugs for about three seconds. This recycles again about three times, then.....nothing. The QSS reckons that you ought to have the bugger running by now!

In my desperation, I located the cable to the four glow plugs, and ran a second wire from the battery (+) via a push-button switch which I installed on the dash. This is my glow-plug BOOST circuit.

Now, when I want to start from c-c-c-cold, I push the button (with the ignition on) for about ten or fifteen seconds, which gives the glow plugs a goodly time to heat up the combustion chamber, and when I hit the starter, she usually fires up with a rattle, and a cloud of grey exhaust smoke.

BINGO!

(Of course, once the motor has warmed up, there is no need to use this BOOST circuit, for the combustion chambers are already hot enough to detonate the injected fuel.)

Have a go at it, as I know that it works!

John.

2008 Toyota Fortuner 3.0D4D - starts very hard when hot. first cold start for the day starts immediately, thereafter cranks for a 4-5 times to start.

I would try a new fuel filter. Its possible that when the engine is hot, the fuel is vaporising causing the hard start?

97 7.3 diesel hard starting

This is a good engine but they need work from time to time. What is the outside temperature while you experience this hard start? If you plug in the block heater, does the engine start better? Is the engine light on or does it come on at times while you are driving? Hard starts can be related to several different issues. This engine isn't easy to work on unless you have an advanced scan-tool. You need to look at live data and run some tests. The more common failures are clogged fuel and air filter. Dirty ,worn, or defective fuel injectors, low fuel-line fuel pressure, poor oil quality or low oil level, worn or defective ICP sensor, low injection pump pressure, loose or leaking IPR valve, or low compression. These examples should help get you started. You may need to have the truck diagnosed so you know what direction to go in. If you need any additional information, please write back. Good luck.

96 Toyota 4Runner sputters when starting when hot only!

how about the fuel filter. I didn't see this on your list and it should be done every 20000km and the air filter. I think its a fuel filter. not the pump. could be the coils but I would start cheap and change fuel filter first. when the pump is cold it pumps with more psi to blow passed the clooged filter after warm it is weaker and has a hard time pushing through the clog

6.0 2004 F-250 was starting hard when cold, replaced glow plugs &harness still starts hard runs rough, glow plug light stays on longer now though

time for replacement of or severe cleaning with fuelinjection cleaner..also if diesel, add cold start to the fuel system..check and replace oil filter type fuel filter since jelling of fuel may be a cold start issue..crack open an injector line and see if injector pump is pushing fuel really well..and see if air cleaner needs replaced blackened element is not good..good luck..

Landcruiser colorado vx auto diesel power loss will hardly move off hardly any response from accelarator will eventually get to about 70mph orange engine warning light on turbo ok

I would start out by looking to see what the color of the smoke is. If it is real black your not getting enough air. Remove the air filter and see if it goes away. If so just change the air filter. If the color is white, then your not getting enough fuel. Start by changing the fuel filter. If neither works you need to start looking into pumps and injectors. I would take it to a mechanic at this point. Good luck.

Hard Starting

first thing i would check is if your glow plugs are actually any good. next i would check your injectors, then the injector pump make sure it's got the needed pressure. change the fuel filter and reprime the system. if the problem still occurs then look for leaks on the fuel system considering it will start with ether tells me it's somehow losing it's prime.

My 2001 chevy diesel truck is very hard to start below 35 degrees

check the glow plugs usually nd external check would indicate power to the plug but in your case i would suggest you to pull atleast a couple of plugs and makes sure that they are getting hot you will find that the plugs are not working replace the glow plugs and the engine will have no problem in starting adn if you live in a cold region make sure that our electric corde is plugged in all night since the diesels need to be warm to operate necause they strictly work on heat from the engine and they do not have spark plugs to ignite the fuel.
