Pump makes a humming sound but will not run

When I turned on my pool pump, it made a buzzing noise but does not run. It seems to be very hot and trips the circuit breaker. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, I am not very mechanically inclined (female!) so any help will be appreciated.

Replace the capacitor. This should be a cheap part.
Your motor needs an extra "kick" to get started when you first power it on. The capacitor provides this. When the capacitor is not working, the motor can't "get started". As a result, lots of power is going to your coils, which generates lots of heat. Since these motors are typically air cooled, no spin means no air. If you continue to allow the motor to operate this way, you will eventually burn up your motor windings.

Don't run it hot or it will stop working.
Sounds like start capacitor has gone bad.

SOURCE: pump makes buzzing noise but

Hi,
The first thing to check is if the pump is siezed up and stopping the motor or if the motor is bad....
Take the motor off of the pump and check to see if the pump will spin... then check if the motor will run without the pump onit...

This will tell you if you have a bad motor or a bad pump...

Pump making a buzz noise but won't start up

it sounds like the motor has seized. if not seized, there may be something blocking the impeller. disconnect the power and try to spin the impeller

Pump is making a buzzing/humming noise but is working

I suspect corrosion in the bearings, which means probably in the motor as well. If it runs nonetheless I'd just keep using it until it stops as once it gets to that stage it isn't economical to repair.

The problem is the starter capacitor on the back or top of motor depending on make. The capacitor is round and black and about 3 inches long and the diameter of a half dollar. it will have 4 wires with quick disconnects on them, unplug and replace capacitor and put wires back on the same way they came off old one. as far as the noise, the bearings are starting to wear and can be replaced when you get tired of the noise. you will have to take it in to have the bearings replaced.

Pump has power at back of motor and I can turn shaft at the back of pump. It is not running.

this motor has a run capacitor, have it tested. search your area for your local pool pump motor repair guy with free testing.. ask him how to remove it, caps can hold a charge and make for a nasty surprise.. THIS IS IF THE MOTOR HUMS OR MAKES A BUZZ NOISE if not, you will need to check the power at THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. no power check, timer, breaker, main breaker ..

My 2 speed jandy pool pump is over heating

you may either have a bad start/run capacitor for the high speed side or bad supply voltage feeding the high speed side. If there are no loud bearing noises, it should just be either of those two problems.

My new AO Smith 2HP pool pump won't pump water, just hums

I'm guessing that you replaced the motor that goes to the pump, not the pump itself. You know the motor works just fine. Is the motor rotating in the correct manner(clockwise or counterclockwise) in relation to the rotation of the pump? Have you checked the pump to see if the impeller is working/rotating? Is the motor hooked up to the pump correctly, so that the motor is turning the impeller? Are all connections to the pump tight, so there are no suction leaks? Have you primed the pump and purged it of any air locks?
