It Started with the Light Changing...

The light on my E5 has always been blue except when I'm virus scanning the drive, in which case it would blink red/blue - no problems. Up until a few weeks ago when suddenly the drive no longer shows up on my computer, the light is *always* red and will only sometimes turn blue and reconnect with my computer. The error it gives me is it needs to be plugged into a high speed port. My problem is that it *is* and has always been in the same port - so why did it work before and not now? Is the external basically fried or is there some reason why it suddenly began to do this?

Re: It Started with the Light Changing...

This problem suggests either a problem with the enclosure electronics or your drive is having electrical/physical problems. First thing I would do is: If running Win2K, WinXP or Vista, check the System event log for errors relating to the "Disk". If no errors, try another USB port or another computer. See what happens. The Blue light is power, the red light is activity, a constant red light means interface problems (as noted above). There are more troubleshooting procedures after the above, but for now they are a bit premature (and lengthy). Let me know what happens. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"

Red light on, but PC does not detect it

Remove the drive from the case and fit it to a new case. The interface in the old case has failed.

Why always the RED LIGHT?

Maybe the detection circuit for the diagnostic lights is faulty, if the disk utility found no issues I would continue using the hardware.

Recording (?) light on front of case continuously flash's, as if it is writing to the HD. haven't found anyway to stop or correct that.

The Hard Disk activity LED indicator blinks only when there is some Read/ Write activity. In your case if the LED is blinking frequently, it certainly means some activity. It could by due to the following reasons: -
1. Antivirus program automatically scanning the disk
2. Probably due to some virus activity.

So, I suggest that you may check the Antivirus program settings for any automatic/ scheduled scans (as some antivirus programs automatically start scanning the external drive). Secondly, if there appears any virus activity (which is likely) you should update the Antivirus program and scan the system. If you dont have the Antivirus program installed on your PC, to disinfect the system you may install antivirus, update it and scan.
AVG 2011 Antivirus FREE Edition
From the above link AVG can be downloaded and installed for FREE. Its basic antivirus protection.
Install AVG and scan the system.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I have 1tb western digital external hard drive. It fell at the usb port got broken, so I went ahead and took it out of it's orginial casing. Placed it in a docking station and all i get is a blinking...

these have software in them for the board in the factory case will have to use a data recovery software to recover contents then reformat the drive OR try installing it as a second drive inside the pc directly to the sata/ide cables not usb. good luck

Why does my hard drive blink

The light blinks to show you that the hard drive disc is working. It should stop after a while, but if not then you need to run a virus scan through it to make sure there are no bugs in it.

Virus can cause it to keep seeking and making the light stay on.

Computer is not recognizing my external hard drive

If the light won't blink, there could be problem with the power source. Do scanning hardisk for errors manually ( take off the hardisk from the case, assemble it on other PC Desktop)

Blinking blue light

the only blue light that i know blinks is the Kmart blue light special .. we need model of things you're working with to properly diagnose.
is it external drive ? with a blue light blinking ? is it connected in usb ? sounds like if its external drive with blinking light could be bad hard disk or bad controller card inside that translates ide to usb.
