Upgrade memory for legacy Toshiba Satellite A40-S270

Currently have 512 Mb RAM and want to max it out. When I try to watch a streaming video file, my computer overheats/fan turns on and computer shuts down.

Based on what I've read, there are two memory slots expandable to 2,048Mb. I presume the current configuration is: in one slot there is a 512Mb, or does it have two 256Mbs one in each slot? ____________

If I replace the current 512Mb w/two 1Gb RAM (one in each slot), will this configuration also cause my computer to overheat?

Any advice in how it all works would be much appreciated. Thanks

If those are the correct specs for your computer, you can indeed install two 1 Gb sticks in it. The overheating may be caused by a ventilation issue on the laptop. There is an access door on the bottom of the laptop that is held in place with a Phillips head screw, you can remove the panel and see if there are two sticks installed. .

Sure! You need to buy the correct RAM that's for your laptop. Turn off and unplug it. Remove the old RAM and install the new RAM exactly like you removed the old RAM. You can now replace the access door and boot the laptop back up. It isn't difficult, just take your time. You can always go to PC Pitstop and they have a test that checks all your components. Post back if you need anymore help!! Good luck!

Wheres the ram?

RAM modules must be installed in special locations on the motherboard called Sockets. These memory sockets are what hold the RAM module in place and can range from 1 to 16 or more. Banks consist of a group of 1 or more sockets. A system can have 1 or more of these banks of sockets. If a system has more than 1 socket in a bank, a Kit must be purchased for that bank. A kit is simply more than one, usually 2 or 4, like RAM modules. All sockets in a bank must be filled. Typically you will see 2x512MB or 2x256MB signifying you get 2 units of 512MB RAM modules or 2 units of 256MB RAM modules, respectively.
The Toshiba Satellite A40-S270 has 2 bank(s) which have 1 socket(s) in each bank for a total of 2 memory socket(s). This means the Satellite A40-S270 can support up to 2 individual RAM modules.
Below is a visual representation of the memory bank(s) and socket(s) configuration for the Toshiba Satellite A40-S270.
socket_1.gifsocket_1.gif This graphical representation above details what the memory configuration would look like with the maximum memory installed and does not necessarily model your system memory configuration. This graphical representation is not drawn to scale and should only be used as a general reference. Please consult your system’s user manual for your actual memory configuration.

I have a Satellite 2405-S221 and I was wondering if the max memory i can install is 512K, is there a way to update the bios, or ANYTHING to increase that amount to at least 1 gig??

Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221 Laptop takes the PC2100 DDR SDRAM SODIMMs Memory Type, and comes installed with 256 MB (removable) of Memory. You can upgrade your Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221 Laptop to up to a maximum of 512 MB Memory, the system has 2 sockets to install Memory, already with 256 MB (removable) standard Memory installed.

In short.... yeah, 512k is the max.

Doesn't appear to a bios limitation. It is a hardware issue that is limiting the amount.

Ram upgradation

The system uses shared video memory, so it will always show less memory than actually installed.
It's a good machine, but needs all memory it can get for Vista.
Good luck
