Thread tangling up under guides at bobbin area

I inherited this sewing machine & am not a sewing person. I made bears for my nieces/nephews out of my mothers clothes and it worked fine. Now I am getting a jam up of thread tangling (from top needle) and wrapping at bobbin area. The manual does nothing for me and as an ''amateur'' I am lost at what to do and/or if I can fix this myself. Just want to be able to use for repairs.

Still have same problem. (I kind of gave up). Not sure as real amatuer what you were asking me to do. I can see that you are probably correct about the tension thing- I have a major tangle problem now - not sure on how to get to it. I took off the plate under foot and there is a screw there - I assume that is what i needed to unscrew? Problem is it is very hard to get at with a large screwdriver and a small one doesn't have power to turn. Plus it is majorally rusted (?) shut. I have sprayed WD40 on it to hopefully loosen but no go. Do you know will this cost me alot to have someone fix? or am I in wrong spot ?? Not sure what I am supposed to unscrew?

Remove the thread from the machine and rethread it . Raise the presser foot before you pass the thread through the tension assembly. Do a tension test.
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} Tension assembly test. To do this test. Pull the thread through the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is working correctly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 or something in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through the tension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. It should pull noticeably harder.)
If it doesn’t work this way then you probably have a piece of thread or lint stuck inside the tension discs. To remove it, turn the tension to 0 zero and raise the presser foot.Using a small screwdriver, open the space between the discs and spray with canned or compressed air. The stuff should come out. Do the tension test again to make sure you got everything and then try sewing again.
Normally, what you are describing is a threading problem or a tension problem.

My machine will sew one or two stitches then the threads get all tangled under the plate. appears to be the top thread, not the bobbin

Try these suggestions

1. Change the needle--use a needle that's for the fabric being sewed

2. Rethread the machine--top --make sure to use every thread guide

3. try a different bobbin--make sure bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case, & make sure the bobbin is turned the correct way in the bobbin case

4. make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever

5. Clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or threads

Bobbin thread tangles

If you have threaded the machine with the presser foot up, check the bobbin to be sure the thread is feeding from the spool in the correct direction and through the guide on the bobbin case.......... and this still happens, then machine needs to go into the shop for service.

Needle's thread gets tangled in bobbin

First, open the needle plate and make sure the bobbin area is clean and free of lint and thread.

Check the needle to make sure it is not bent and is properly inserted into the holder - usually with the flat side facing to the back of the machine.

Refer to your manual for bobbin insertion to be sure the thread is feeding from the bobbin in the correct direction and through the proper guides.

Always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up. This opens the tension control and allows the thread to properly enter.

When the foot is down, the tension control closes to the sewing setting and if the thread is not in place, there is no tension on the thread and it gets loopy.

After threading, lower and raise the needle while holding onto the thread tail. This will pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate. Take hold of both threads and take them under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

Hand walk the first stitch when sewing and this should keep the top and bottom thread from tangling.

When stopping to change the position of the fabric (turning a corner, sewing a curved seam for example), do so with the needle down into the fabric. This not only anchors the fabric so it does not slip, but prevents mis-stitching.

If you are doing everything according to the manual and are still having a problem, the machine may need to be professionally serviced.
