Hi! Looks like it doesn't power up when I connect it. No picture, no sound. Do I need a new power cable?

Garmin shows picture of computer

When the Garmin shows the picture of a computer, it means that the Nuvi is in mass storage mode. This mode is used to load software and map updates to the Nuvi and will usually go into this mode when connected to a computer or improper USB cable.
If this is occurring when it is connected to the vehicle power cable, chances are that the vehicle power cable is the wrong one.

Recharging/Traffic Problem with Garmin StreetPilot 550

Initially, you would need a DVM (voltmeter) to check if there is an output from the cigarette lighter adapter/charger. Your post " lights on cable is on (the one closest to the socket)..." indicates that there is 12VDC coming in (from your car) but "...the other one is not..." signifies that the adapter is not processing the incoming 12VDC and forward it to your Garmin StreetPilot 550. With the DVM, you can measure the output B+ (which should be something like +5VDC) which is also the output voltage of your computer's USB port.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I cannot use my garmin 300t whilst it is plugged in charging, it just shows a page with what looks like a computer tower, a cable and a satnav. i cannot navigate away from that screen

The power cable used to charge the unit is putting it into mass storage mode. This mode is used to upload and download map data and updates to and from the computer to the unit. If this is happening when it is just connected to a power source and not the computer, it would mean that the power cable being used is not the correct one.

The recommended vehicle power cable for the Oregon or Colorado 300t will need the Garmin part number 010-10851-11 .

My garmin shows a computer picture and doesn't switch on anymore!

Connect it with the USB cable to a PC / Mac - does it communicate with If so look for a software update and load it. Make absolutely sure it's connected to external power - so the battery won't die when updating. Then wait for it to restart.

If no connection then hold the power button for more than 20 seconds - this triggers the auto reset.

If that doesn't help - let it sit like this till the battery has been drained. Then try to restart while charging it.

If still the same - let it drain again and while pressing the On button, hold the lower right corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds. This will trigger a master reset - reverting back to factory mode. It will erase all user data.

GPS III Pilot? will not power up

Try the dc plug too (also make sure the battery connections are good in the caste). IF still no power up, the internal battery may be shorted. Lots of info online for replacing the internal battery. Good Luck!

Bad white lines on the Garmin gps III Plus display..... how we can repair it?

It sounds like you have a problem with the screen itself. Garmin at has an excellent repair program. They repair your out of warrant GPS for a flat fixed rate. The GPS is like new when you get it back. Just to to the Garmn web site click on the support tab and follow the menu selections from there.

Garmin V

I think I may have found the solution.

A reply for a post on another site:

I visited the Garmin Corp office to seek help with that problem. If the shut down occurs right after satellite acquisition and the screen may show just a narrow black line going across it, it is likely due to some program changes the sattelite folks did without telling the software programmers. Garmin web site has a free download fix for the problem. Another option is to go into your settings and turn off the WAAS. Hope this helps. Go to the web site, check downloads, find your model gps and there you go. Good luck.

I disabled WAAS and so far so good.

I couldn't find the fix on the Garmin site.

Garmin GPS III Pilot to PC communication problem

If it were doing this just on the Vista machine I would say it was Vista related but since you are getting it from an xp machine as well the problem is either cable or the gps unit. You don;t say if this just started happening or ? If you can try out the cable on something else to make sure so you can eliminate it. About the only thing you can do is to make sure the port settings in the pilot are set correctly. Generally the slower the better if you are having communication problems as this makes the signal timing not as critical. Try 9600 baud to start. Make sure that the data bits are also set roght. This is the 8n1 or 7n1 thing you see. I can;t think of what the default is on the garmin but as long as both pc and garmin have speed, bits, parity, and stop but set the same they should talk.

Try to download from the unit as well as upload.Unfortunetly you can only change the speed and protocal or reset the unit. You won't be able to fix it if is a hardware thing. If you are using a USB to Serial adapter then I would say that is your problem or could be. Cheaper ones just don't work often on higher port speeds. You might want to try the gps on a pc with a actual serial port if you are using one. If it works then you should try a different brand of adapter or really slow down the speeds.

This won;t solve it unless you luck out but it should let you know where the problem is.
