DVD driver stopped working

My Gateway laptop 151x came with an Optiarc DVD RW ad7640a ata device driver. It worked fine for a year then suddenly stopped playing dvds (still plays CDs). When disk is inserted Windows Media Center a message appears that no device is recognized in drive E. Same if I go into E; it says to insert a disk. I am going insane skirting all around this issue. Even Gateway can't (or won't) help me.

ype dvdplay in cmd and try playing it
