I purchased my laptop several months ago and live in a remote location, not easy to get work done under warranty. My dvd player will not read a cd or dvd unless i restart the pc, when i remove it and try another one it still reads the previous dvd unless i restart the pc. I have tried everything with autoplay because i believe that autoplay has something to do with it but even that wont work

Hi, Had this problem once in XP Pro SP2 and tried so many remedies which did not correct it. Finally, I found out that my registry was modified by a malicious software (maybe a virus even). It would then possibly be: a modified registry value; a tweaking utility was applied (like Tweak-XP Pro or TweakUI), and/or an update or security software disabled/modified some default features. Of particular interest was the setting at this registry entry: HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer I have attached a screenshot of the current settings/values of this particular entry. Of course, the usual precaution when modifying registry applies - backup, copy old values that you may revert if it does not work, etc.

    Hi again,
I reviewed the post and noticed that the screenshot in my browser did not show the values, to see all you have to: right click on image, click on View Image (Mozilla) and Zoom out in IE.
Hope this gives you an idea or two. Good luck and pls post again how things turn up. Kind regards.

Whats a dual layer disc mean then?

A dual layer disc is a DVD which is able to hold double the info.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD#Dual-layer_recording )
Dual-layer recording (sometimes also known as double-layer recording) allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data-up to 8.54 gigabytes per disc, compared with 4.7 gigabytes for single-layer discs. Along with this, DVD-DLs have slower write speeds as compared to ordinary DVDs and when played on a DVD player a slight transition can sometimes be seen between the layers. DVD-R DL was developed for the DVD Forum by Pioneer Corporation; DVD+R DL was developed for the DVD+RW Alliance by Philips and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM).[23]
A dual-layer disc differs from its usual DVD counterpart by employing a second physical layer within the disc itself. The drive with dual-layer capability accesses the second layer by shining the laser through the first semitransparent layer. In some DVD players, the layer change can exhibit a noticeable pause, up to several seconds.[24] This caused some viewers to worry that their dual-layer discs were damaged or defective, with the end result that studios began listing a standard message explaining the dual-layer pausing effect on all dual-layer disc packaging.
DVD recordable discs supporting this technology are backward-compatible with some existing DVD players and DVD-ROM drives.[23] Many current DVD recorders support dual-layer technology, and the price is now comparable to that of single-layer drives, although the blank media remain more expensive. The recording speeds reached by dual-layer media are still well below those of single-layer media.
There are two modes for dual-layer orientation. With Parallel Track Path (PTP), used on DVD-ROM, both layers start at the inside diameter (ID) and end at the outside diameter (OD) with the lead-out. With Opposite Track Path (OTP), used on many Digital Video Discs, the lower layer starts at the ID and the upper layer starts at the OD, where the other layer ends; they share one lead-in and one lead-out.

If you purchased it new, you should be able to get the keyboard replaced under warranty. Dell's come with a minimum 1-year warranty. Give them a call and tell them the issue with the spacebar.

Hello. My name is Deriyn. I have bought Samsung Lap top as Sens R480 model 7 months ago. But, Suddenly, my DVD player of this model doesn't work properly. It can notice what kind of CD in but It can not...

If this laptop was purchased new, then it may have a 12 months warranty. If this is the case I suggest you get it repaired under warranty.
If you want to repair it yourself and you are confident in removing the DVD drive from the laptop, then purchase a new DVD drive. I suggest you Google search for a DVD drive that suits the Samsung or purchase the DVD drive from Samsung. If you purchase a DVD drive check the connector at the back of the DVD drive may be different from the one in the Samsung, otherwise it won't fit in the Samsung laptop.

Usually pressing the record button a few times will change recording increments on all machines. Some newer universal remotes that have codes for dual dvd/vcr machines will work not older remotes.

With the price of those units, it's usually cheaper to replace them. You could check with Samsung and find out if it's still covered under their warranty.

CD/DVD won't eject, won't play, Device Manager doesn't recognize.

If it's only 8 months old, then you have atleast 4 months left on your warranty. The problem will either be the ide controller channel or the dvd drive and firmware has faulted, the same fault probably happens when you have put a dvd in and it wont read or eject. Return to the place of purchase, where the drive should be replaced or the notebook exchanged.
