Question about Sony Xplod XM-554ZR Car Audio Amplifier

General Amp problem.

When I hook my amp up and turn it on, my car starts smoking out of the exhaust...really badly. It's a white smoke...almost like steam. But it's a ton of it, more when I accelerate. Someone said it was due to the amp being bad...bought a new Xplod...did the same thing.Anyone know the problem? I've stumped many experts with this.

Re: General Amp problem.

Dude ,The white smoke has nothing to do w/your amp you have water/coolant entering your combustion chamber, could be intake manifold, head gasket, cracked exhaust seat in the head, take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop for diagnosis and estimate ,Whatever you do ,,,,,DO NOT!! take your car to the so called 'experts' this should be a simple job to correctly diagnose and repair , try to shortcut on this job to save money buy having a 'buddie'will cost you a lot more in the long run , pay the money to have in repaired by a qualified tech, you will be glad you did, one more thing , be sure to check to make sure your cooling fan is operational....good luck Royal Trent Master auto tech [A.S.E.20 yrs]

I have a memphis mcd 1000. It started smoking and blew both fuses. I replaced the fuses now when I hook power to the amp sparks real bad like the power and ground are touching

I hate to tell you this, but you have something major. Shorted. Check your wires and conections with a meter. The bad news. Is your amp may be a goner.

Well its not a good sign when your equipt starts smoking . Chances are that at least one channel of your amp is bad .But your real quest is to find out why the amp smoked in the first place. Chances are you have a shorted wire or speaker or both. Best way to check is is to check the wire with an ohm meter, if it reads less than 4 ohms you have a short .Next disconnect the speaker and check the wires to ground and measure the speaker. You need to do this before you repair or replace your amp or you will have it happen again. Noow it is possible the amp did fail on its own but the chances are it had help.

Well, sounds like you have an internal damage since it smokes, if it smokes as soon as it kicks on, and blowing the fuse right away, I would have it fixed. But my guess would be something with the ground that is making this happen, or some how your power is grounding on the amp. When ever smoke comes into play, thats never good any way at this point you gotta admitt that thiers internal damage.. blowing fuses can also be cause by over working your amp. along with the sub load at 1 ohm make sure your amp can do the same.. hope this was helpful in some way

Smoking amp

The only way you'll know is by hooking it up and testing it. Amps should not smoke, so there's a pretty good chance you fried it.

Boss 2500GT mono block car amp white smoke after 5 mins

I'm not familiar with this particular model but this appears to be the filter inductor in a class D amp. If I had to guess, the white smoke is from the filter capacitors connected to this inductor.

You should check with Boss to see if it's available. If it's not, you can re-wind it. You'll need to measure the diameter of the wire to determine its gauge.

If the filter caps vented, you'll have to replace those also.

If the terminals were smoking, it's probably due to loose screws in the terminal block or wire that's too small.

Did the amp work properly after the terminal blocks smoked?

Gee I would think that it is kind of obvious; your amp is blown. Just because it doesn't blow fuses doesn't mean much. If you hook the power up to the ground input and the ground to the power and then turn it on you pretty much toasted the amplifier. If you don't know why the amp is smoking, but you're trying to fix it yourself, you are basically telling me that you have no business doing so. I have been an installer for 15 years and even I am not dumb enough to try to fix a bad amplifier. Do everyone a REALLY big favor; stop messing around with something that you don't understand of have knowledge about before you hurt yourself.

if the amp is still under warranty, i would rma it. there is no easy way to tell what happened without opening the amp up, but from your description, it sounds like it fried the board, or at the very least fried some of the capacitors inside the amp (although the smoke would usually be a bluish white if this were the case). this seems to happen if you are running them at anything over 15-16 volts, i have seen two of these fry at 18 volts.

it could be something as simple as a shorted wire or trace at the fuse receptacle, but once again, your best bet if it is under warranty would be to rma it and ask them to let you know what happened to it.

Help! Amp not turning on

Im sorry to have to inform you my friend, if you saw smoke, you burned one or more of the resistors or output devices inside the amp. Without a service manual, it will be a hard call on what exactly cooked. In alot of cases please forgive me for saying so, but the ampis not worth taking into a repair shop to be repaired, because of the high cost these days of labor. Its too bad there are no user replacable parts inside of these amps. Good Luck. Ps Please do not forget to rate this thread?
