This happened to a friend of mine. What he did, is used the wrong software to jailbreak.
This can happen if you select the wrong model (original, 3G, or 3GS) and if you select the wrong firmware compared to that on your device.

Are you on At&t? If not then you need to unlock your iphone. Jailbreak does not unlock an iphone it only lets you install apps from Cydia. You need to unlock it to make phone calls.
