exact same problem. replaced with a new toner and toner light still stays on. tried even replacing it with a whole different set of drum and cartridge since i have multiple printers that take the same drum and toner. toner light stays on so i know it is something wrong with the printer itself.

The Postit solution worked fine for me!

I was quite mad at my brand new Brother printer for refusing to print and lighting the "out of toner" light even though it was printing fine until then. (No blank spaces or lighter shades in the printouts)

I put a piece of masking tape in the hole, just like Seline says, and it works FINE.

    Thanks Seline!!

I had the same problem -- but on a half-used cartridge.

    Seline's solution worked great!

I believe I've replaced at least two cartridges that were only half used.

When you hit the "GO" button about 5 times, a "print settings" page comes out and you will be surprised at how much ink is left in the drum -- mine was only 52% used, yet the toner light was blinking and the printer totally stopped. Covering the hole on the left side of the cartridge did the trick.

    Thank you, Seline!

NEWER MODLES HAVE A CARTRIGE ESTIMATING PROGRAM THAT NEEDS RESET (you need to tell the printer that it has a new cartrige). SIMPLY....
1. OPEN THE FRONT COVER.
2. TURN OFF.
3. HOLD DOWN THE GO BUTTON AND TURN BACK ON.
4. ONCE ALL 3 LIGHTS ARE SOLID, LET GO OF THE BUTTON & PRESS IT 2 TIMES RIGHT AWAY.
5. ALL LIGHTS SHOULD GO SOLID AGAIN, WHEN THEY DO PRESS THE GO BUTTEN 5 TIMES IN A ROW.

THIS SHOULD RESET YOUR PRINTER AND LET IT KNOW IT HAS A NEW CARTRIGE (even if it doesn't)!

I been having the same problem recently & tried every available method...The i read this on another website and thought I must share with everyone...Simply paste a little piece of Post-it and cover up the hole at the left side of the toner..And so far I restarted the printer 3 times and the toner light is not on any more!!! Incredible!!!

I had the same problem until I removed the 3 screws on the left side of the toner cartridge and completely removed the white 'gear tab'. Then I put it back together, turned off the printer and reinstalled the cartridge and drum assembly. When I turned it back on - voila! Works fine now. HTH

It is not a problem with printer itself, no matter how many times you switch toner with another used toner!

There is a lever that hits a switch on left side of toner cart, new position it is nearly at back of slot, after it has been inserted once it falls forward to front of cart. If you undo screws on lever mechanism on toner cartridge you can relocat the lever to the back, about 9 oclock position, Reinsert toner to drum and refit.

Confirmation the lever thing works. I am going back to my old cartridges and use them up 100%. Saves running to the shops in the middle of printing, printers are cheap but time is money.

Is there a tab to pull out for the cartridge.

Chances are, you got a bad cartridge.  Get your money back.

Toner light is flashing and printing has stopped

Hello ,

This problem is a common issue and easily fixed.
When putting in a new toner cartridge, the printer usually automatically resets the toner count.
In a situation like this, the printer did not automatically do the reset and so we must manually reset the printer.

To manually reset the printer, first, remove the toner from the printer and separate it from the drum unit.

With the toner cartridge in hand and the brother writing facing you, look to the left side of the cartridge. You should see an arc shaped opening with a white tab in it.

The tab is set at the right position and must be pushed back to the left side of the opening.
To push the tab back, you must turn the grey gear attached to the front roller upwards as you push the tab.

Once the tab has been placed to the left position, the printer will accept it as a new toner cartridge.

Thanks,

Pat

I have 3 Brother HL-20040 laser printers but 2 of the 3 show the toner (yellow) light with good cartridges. Is this a common problem? Is the sensor bad? Do I junk it for another which I can purchase new...

Could be a bad sensor., but if you put a small piece of electrical tape over the windows on each side of the toner cartridge, ti will think there's toner and the light should be out. When prints come out blank, it's time for more toner...

Brother HL-2040 toner led stays on, won't print

There is a window on each end of the toner cartridge that you can cover with electrical tape and keep printing, it shines a light thru and when the toner is too low it says it's empty. The weight can be misleading.

Your not resetting the toner reset lever. It's on the left end (not the fill cap side) of the cartridge. If you have a resettable cartridge on the left end you will see to white pieces. One round and one like a lever in a half moon slot. We will be addressing the lever in the half moon slot only. The lever on a used cartridge will be at the 3 O'clock position. Remove the two screws from the end cap and then move the gear to the 11 O'clock position. Put the end cap and screwss back on. Put it back in the printer and close the door. When the printer powers up it will sweep the lever across the sensor and reset the toner level to full.

Hope that helps you.

****Important Note****
When refilling, make sure you dump out and clean ALL OF THE OLD TONER from the cartridge before refilling. Brother reuses it's old toner putting it back into the fresh toner supply (along with debri) and slowly contaminates it's supply with paper dust and talc from the paper.

If you don't clean out the supply hopper well before refilling, it will quickly mix your new toner with the old toner and more quickly contaminate the entire supply. USE GOOD PAPER, NOT CHEAP PAPER and your supplies and refills will last much longer.

BROTHER Hl 2040 PRINTER WON'T PRING

I got exactly the same problem and the "reset" didn't do anything. I fixed it by putting a piece of duck tape on magic eye on the cartridge.
Fallow those step to do the same thing as me:
  1. Open the front panel.
  2. Remove the toner and the drum
  3. Remove the toner FROM the drum
  4. On each side of the toner, there should be a little glass. Put the piece of duck tape on one of them. I put mine on the right side.
  5. Put everything back in.
  6. Turn on your printer if it's not already.
  7. Now, the low toner light should be gone and the green light should be on.
Now, you can really empty your cartridge.

Replaced toner cartridge now doesn't work

If you pull out the paper tray you will see a rubber pick up roller. Clean that roller with a rag and some rubbing alcohol. It sounds as if the roller is slipping and not bringing the paper in fully. Good luck John
