Unplug the printer cable from the machine. clear the print que on the computer, shut off the printer. then reconnect printer cable and turn it back on. that should take care of it.

It does sound like a paper sensor in the automatic document feeder may be stuck and the machine keeps trying to eject the paper that is not there. I have not seen this before, you may have to call Brother at 1-877-BROTHER to find the nearest service center.

Can't fax multible pages

Your fax machine reads multiple pages into memory before sending the job, this is the pool memory. Two things can cause this error.

  1. Corrupted memory, which keeps the job from transmitting because the data stored is scrambled and lost prior to transmission.
  2. Line static, which makes the connection so unstable and slow that the fax can't get enough pages out of the queue fast enough to make room for the next pages entering the buffer.
If you checked the line and it tested good (not just listening for a dial tone), then it is probably a memory issue.

My brother mfc-490cw I can't send or recieve faxes.

According to the User's Manual for the Brother MFC-490CW:
  • Poor Line Connection indicates an issue with your telephone line (Page 136). If you are sharing the fax line with any splitters or computers, try connecting the MFC-490CW directly to the phone jack and send a fax. If you are still getting a Poor Line Connection error message, call the telephone company and have a repair technician check your telephone line.

  • Out of Memory error message means the machine's memory is full (Page 138).

Try pressing Stop/Exit and wait until all current operations finish and try again.

Try clearing the data in memory. To gain extra memory space. turn off Memory Receive (See Page 48).

Try printing the faxes that are in memory (See Page 49).

  • System Busy error message wasn't in the manual, but I suspect it means there's a current operation in progress and the machine needs time to finish before moving on to another job. Just wait for the current job to finish, then try again.

Brother MFC 8220 all-in-one fax prints with a vertical line

First guess is you have a bit of dirt (often white-out from people scanning corrected paper that's not quite dry) stuck on the fax scan window. This should be described pretty well in your user manual (which you can download online from

Its also possible that there is dirt (typically loose toner) on the laser scan window (there's a laser that shines through it to get the image pattern on the drum). That window is often along the bottom of the unit under the drum/cartridge (take the cartridge out and look). The Brother manual I've seen seems to ignore this possibility.

Print streaks DO NOT mean cartridge drum replacement in many cases !! On brother Intellifax or MFC or other laser copier/printer/fax, keep in mind that either the fax/copy scan window OR the laser scan window can get dirty. If the fax scan window is dirty, you see streaks on outgoing faxes and copies (but NOT incoming faxes). If the laser scan window is dirty, you see streaks on all prints (copies, faxes, print-from-computer).

Note also that when transporting/moving some laser copier with the toner cartridge inside, the toner can get out and make a big mess inside (including getting the laser scan window dirty). An air compressor can be usefull to blow it out. And sometimes using alcohol to clean is a BAD idea (maybe incompatible with plastic and rubber parts). A damp rag is probably fine.

OK ill help you A faxmachine has a buffer on it what it does is fasimilate the data into a text or message that can be printed what happens here is you have fax/printer the buffer for the printer should be on your computer and not be sent until your ready to print (also known as the print que) all print jobs should be saved when a fax comes in but when a fax comes in and you dont have print que software your printjob is lost. But this brand is familiar to me so the software you install for this hardware should have a print que or buffer so you dont have this problem maybe you need the new BROTHER MFC software at the following link{creative}&site={placement}&loadingComplete=true

Brother hl 1440 laser printer, print job stuck in que.

Try to stop the print spool and restart it. This should clear any jobs that's in your pc. As for the printer ususally if you shut it down for about 30 sec, it should clear the printer memory.
hope this helps.
