Remove the carburetor and clean it in some carburetor cleaner. Contact the marina for a rebuild kit ($25.00) and pay attention to how you take it apart. (You will find it really easy!) clean it, put the new parts in and start the motor with water going through it and adjust the carb. Or you can take it to a shop and pay $150.00 for them to do the work.

2009 Honda BF50 Marine Outboard. It takes about 10 minutes of driving before it starts to run normally. Adding gas to the drive means engine choking.

Question edited for clarity, 'year make model (what it is)'.
Question moved from Honda Cars.

In the same way as cars are fuel injected and completely electronically driven, you have to take them to a dealer and they put them on a scan tool computer. That diagnoses all the systems and tells where the problem is.

If the problem clears after 10 minutes and warming up, it is likely a fuel injector issue. Check the spark plugs and leads. Or the choke is sticking and then comes unstuck. I have never used the choke on my Mercury 60.

The guy in the video is Kyle Noseworthy, and he is also a great knifemaker. He sharpened 4 knives for me. Not sure if the video will help, but it is the only one on that engine.

My Honda 9.9 4 stroke outboard will idle ok but will not throttle up?

Hello, everyone.
The engine is generally healthy and what bugs me the most, has JUST been overhauled by a good mechanic, which included cleaning the carb, after which it started on 1-3 pulls and ran like magic.
Today I went fishing for the first time after not using the boat for about 3 weeks. The engine started fine (with 2/3 choke), I let it warm up a bit, with little-to-none choke. Idle was a tiny bit rough, but nothing major. When I set it on idle for the first time, it ran for about 3 minutes and died. Since then I could only start it with either choke or some throttle and it'd always die quite soon on idle or close to idle. When I try to start it warm with no choke, it'd sound as if it catches and dies off immediately.
The plugs are 1 month old and adjusted, oil's in order, no detectable problems with the prop or anything else.

I have a suspicion it might be either condensate or some grit in the fuel tank, which was stored in a rather damp place for 3 weeks, half full (although tightly closed). What should I check and is there a way to condition the fuel somehow to remove condensate and clean out eventual b/s from the carb without major mechanical work (I really don't want to pull the boat ashore before autumn)?

Thank you!

Yamaha outboard engine. Model f20leha manufactured 5-2011, has about 30 hours on it. Sinse new engine is hard to start, after finally getting engine started, hard to keep it running untill engine gets...

have you left the choke open ? this mixes more fuel to the engine upon starting but will stall it if left open too long . check your fuel filter too it may be full of debris.

I have a 1993 2 stroke 40 hp mercury outboard motor and it seems that whenever you start it you need to use the choke, even when it's been running for some time and warm. Is that normal for these motors?...

Use it .It is a common thing with 2 strokes.Outboards have water in them and cool down quicker than say a 2 stroke motorbike. They have no water and keep the heat in the engine longer. If it runs well,,don't spend the money. All the choke does is gives the motor a slightly richer air/fuel mix at startup. It cannot hurt the motor.Hope this helps

Must push choke in periodically to keep it running. it's a remote control, and you choke it by pushing in the key. mod#; bj35vl3sie. 2 stroke.

Adjust your idle mixture screw. If that doesnt work then run the engine at high rpm's and push the choke in until it is about to die and let off. This will create a vaccuum in the carb and possibly **** out any particles in your jets. If that doesnt work then I would rebuild the carbs.
