Garage door does not reverse

When an object is placed in front of the sensors my door still closes and does not reverse, The lights stay on on both sensors even when the beam is clearly interrupted. Is this a problem with the sensors or the circuit board? If it is the circuit board is it repairable without replacing the whole board?

With both sensors covered, lights stay on. If I disconnect the sensors at the opener the door reverses the way it should when attempting to close.

  • rgpartyka Mar 19, 2009

    Yes, that is correct

Changed the sensors and works like new now. Thank you. FYI - it was the receving unit that was bad.

Hi, Ok, just to be clear, as the door is traveling down, you disconnect the sensors and the door reverses as if an object was detected. Correct?

Hi, you need to do some more troubleshooting. Do you have sunlight shining on one or both sensors? if you cover both sensors do you still have lights? As one is a transmitter and one a receiver you should be able to break the circuit. You can also open or short the circuit at the connections to determine if it is the sensors or the board. Let me know!

Hi again, Thank you for getting back to me, this indicates that the main unit is OK and one or both of the sensors is bad. The basic principle of the safety circuit is that the circuit is complete or connected until broken by an object, There are several different types of sensors the most common is an led transmitter on one side and an optical receiver on the other, which shines a beam of light that requires the sensors to be aligned to "see" each other. The light on the sensor indicates that it sees the beam and if you wave your hand in front of it, it should go out indicating that it doesn't thus breaking the circuit. The light constantly on indicates something shorted in one of the sensors. You could probably hook them up one at a time to see which one might be at fault but then again you would want to replace them as a pair, and a new pair of sensors should put you back in working order. Good Luck, this should Fixsya!

Readout on mobile device says:"garage door opener was stopped" What does this mean? door has been opening on its own off and on lately.

• This could be a problem with the amount of torque needed to close the garage door. Some garage door openers sense the amount of torque and will stop or reverse if an object gets in the path of the door. There may be some sort of adjustment for the closing force that you will need to adjust towards a stronger setting.
• There could be a problem with a light sensor that detects if an object is in the way. Insects, spider webs, or other objects may be interfering with the light beam. The sensor and source light may need adjustment.

My garage door opener is a 3/4 craftsman and one light is yellow and the other is green. I put my hand in front of the green light and the green light went off. the other side is a yellow light and it

Hi Vickie,

The safety beam portion of the garage door opener is set up to stop the door from closing if something (car, person, etc,.) is in the doorway.

When the door is open - if you press the hard wired push button (not the wireless remote) the door will either close until shut completely, or begin to close and reverse direction as soon as you let go of the button. When this happens, it *usually* means that a sensor is blocked - and reversing the door motor. If you try yhtis with the remote the door may not move at all or just bump down and stop.

You should re-align the sensors as described in the link below. Good luck!

I have a liftmaster Model 1240. Door will open by remote or wall opener. The door will only close while holding wall opener button down. If i try and close via remote, light starts blinking and door...

The only thing that will cause the main light to flash 10 times and the door to reverse to the open position is a sensor problem. Make sure the light on each sensor is on and not flickering ever so slightly. Make sure they are not moving when the door starts to close. Lights on sensors should not blink. One light should stay on constantly and the other sensors light should go off when you block the sensors.

When the sensors on the garage door are broke the light doesn't come anymore but when you close the garage door and brake the sensor the door stops and opens

If when you place an object between the sensors the door reverses to the open position they are doing what they are supposed to. You may have a bad bulb or need to pull out on the center contact in the socket. Be sure to unplug the unit first.

Anytime the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors.

I am having the same problem the garage door won't stay down. I have leveled the sensors light beams and make sure that nothing was in the path. I have the model where the light is on front end toward...

The lights sensors are not the problem.

Garage door will reverse direction automatically if it contacts the hood of your car or a bicycle. Your garage door is coming too far down, impacting the concrete, and then reversing.

The fix is simple.

You need to adjust the tripper switch just above the garage door. When the door is closing, it trips a little lever that's attached to the center rail. It's just a little flipper with 2 wires connected to it.

Move this flipper switch back tower the closer mechanism about 3 inches >>> try garage door again >> and then adjust location of flipper until garage door works just right.

My liftmaster 2265 1/2 hp remote does not close

If the door starts to close and the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a problem with the door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and they each have a small light that must be on and not flickering.

If it starts to close but reverses and the main light does not flash 10 times it is possibly the RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

Garage Door won't close!

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a problem with the door sensors. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not blinking ever so slightly. If it doesn't flash it is most likely the RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. There is also a possibility that the down force needs to be increased. This is a control on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Increase it about a quarter turn.

Door opens after closing

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem but if the door is hitting the floor and reversing and the main light is not flashing then the door is closing too far and the safety thinks it has hit something. On the side of the motor unit you will find 2 controls. One of these is the 'down limit'. Turn this in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover until the door closes but does not reverse.
