This is probably happening because, underneath your shift console, there is a lever that keeps you from shifting from park without the keys in. The best way I found to fix this was, there are 6 screws, that keep you from getting to it, they are pretty visible, two right in front of the passenger and driver seat, 2 closer to where your feet would be if you were sitting in those seats, and two at the back of the e-brake console. Take this entire plastic off and you'll find that when you sit in your passenger seat, you can see a piece that is most likely dirty from spilled drinks and such, and if you push it, it may not budge, this is a solenoid, this is that piece that is keeping you from shifting from park, I recommend keeping and cleaning the solenoid if your solenoid is not completely corroded, in my case, I had to just destroy the entire thing.

The reason that solenoid piece is why you can't shift from park is because you have that solenoid piece, underneath your shifter, and when you push the button, it's hitting the solenoid. The reason for this is, the fact that your shifter uses a small cylindrical piece to guide and stay in gears, and that small cylindrical piece is probably hitting your solenoid.

1995 Mercury Tracer/Trio Wagon 4 cylinder automatic THE SHIFTER IS STUCK IN PARK.The button won't push in to release it. Help Thanks, Dave St.Pete,FL

I am not an expert on this, but there should be a little plastic piece that you can pop out. it should be right around the shifter may around the "P". If you pop off the cover and take something small like a pen or screwdriver and depress the piece in the cavity it will come out of park. But you may have to do that every time after you shift to park until you get it fixed.

My battery is dead and I can't move the car due to the auto gear shift stuck in park. How do I move the car to get a jump on the battery?

if you look on the center council where the shift lever is you will see a small plastic button on the drivers. Remove the button. Insert a small screwdriver into the hole and push down. You will then be able to move the shift lever into nuetral and push the car.

My 1998 Tracer is stuck in park. When I push on the brake, the button on the shifter will not push in.

Hello! It sounds as if your gear shift lock isn't working properly - it should release when you depress the brake pedal. You're not stuck, however. There is a small plastic piece to the side of the gear shift on the console - you can pry this piece up and off, revealing a hole underneath. Insert a screwdriver straight down and you will push on the manual gear shift release button - once you do that you will be able to move the gear shift. This can be caused by a few things - weak battery, or the release button is broken behind the brake pedal.

Hope this helps and good luck!

SAAB 2002 93 automatic gear stuck

you have to push your shift override button? Your cable that runs from your ignition/steering column to your shift knob could be worn and therefore loose not allowing the car the be shifted out of park (as if your key weren't in the ignition). Hope this helps
