I think it is the mother board. The fan doesn't even work. It acts like it is going to start at first but then it shuts down. I am not real good with computers but my husband seems to think he could replace the mother board and fix the problem.

- The model number is P9850A 513n HP. None of the fans are working. They act like they are trying to start and then they shut down.

- It makes no sounds or anything.

Clarification Request

Which fan doesn't work? Is it a case fan, the fan on the CPU chip on the motherboard, or the fan in the power supply? How long does it 'look like it is going to start' before dying? It may not be a motherboard issue at all; it could be the power supply. And what is the specific model number of the system?

How far does it get before it shuts down? Does it show anything on the screen? Does it make any beeping noises or anything? Which fan doesn't work? Could be a fault power supply as well.

Do any of the fans plug into the wires going directly to the power supply? If so, you probably have a bad power supply. If they all plug into the motherboard, it could be the motherboard at fault, though usually when something fails because of the motherboard, it can still tell you what it was via beep codes and such. I would think the power supply is to blame, and the upside is that they are cheaper than the motherboards if you are interested in keeping this PC for a while longer.

Hi there.
If its the CPU (processor fan) thats not working, it could well be the machine overheating and shutting down to prevent further damage to the machine, try another fan, if it spins up the CPU fan has gone and will need to be replaced.
If you have a working fan but it doesn't work on the motherboard, check the power supply unit as that could be faulty.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
