My recorded tv freezes when trying to watch them

The whole thing freezes? As in the mouse or keyboard won't even work?

If it's just the video that freezes and you can shut it off, most likely it's a codec issue. Which is dumb since everything you're using came packaged together in the unit. Installing a third party codec pack would solve this issue.

Though, if you're whole PC is freezing when you try to play a video then I have a few other questions to ask you to narrow the potential problems down:

1. Open up the player that opens automatically when you try to watch something, but don't load a video into it. Did everything still freeze?
2. If not, then open a video file that is not something you recorded from TV, like a DVD or a video clip from the net. Did it freeze then?
3. When it freezes, does it freeze instantly? Or does it run for a little bit then freeze. If the latter is the case, what happens in the time between opening the file and the lock down?

Philps DVD Recorder/VCR

Barbara,From your description of multiple problems there is, more than likely, a circuitry problem that is causing the unit to shut down. Unfortunately, this is not an easy fix and will require a trip to the shop. Get an estimate before approving repair. In the new world of disposable electronics the cost of repair may exceed the value of the unit.
I just checked eBay and there is an identical model (Item number:300342819479) priced at a "Buy It Now" price of $44.00. So there is your answer. It would cost less to buy a replacement than to repair your unit. Like I said: "welcome to the world of disposable electronics"!!

Plays for a minute or two - then just shuts itself off

Mine will intermittently record only the first minute or two of a tv show I have queued up to regularly record. It seems to happen anywhere from every show to every 5-10.

Usually the tension of the take-up reel keeps the shut-off arm taught and everything works. If the shut off arm falls down, the recorder stops. Is that what's happening?

Inadaquate (or NO) take-up tension can cause this; so can WARPED take up reels. Another possibility: if you play a lot of old tapes, the groove in the shut-off arm collects dirt and oxide, so the tape - as it goes through it - jams, and the take-up reel can not overcome the tension. The arm "falls down" and shuts off the machine. Also SOME tapes (which were "cut down" from 2"
tapes) are poorly ****, and will jam some machines.

This is what I do for a living, so if these suggestions don't work, give me more information, and I'll solve your problem.
