Question about Samsung PCN5425R 54" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Samsung PCL5415RBX TV is four years old. I want to see if I can fix the problem before having to call a repair man that is going to charge me $400+ that maybe I can fix myself. We were out of town for a week, when we got home, kids turned on TV to see a Blue Line that made an inverted crest across the screen. Anybody out there who can help me or lead me in the right direction?

Re: samsung PCL5415RBX

If you have nothing more to offer than this poor excuse for tech support, then you could have not wasted our time by not posting such a stupid comment.

One of your convergence IC's has burned out and needs to be replaced. The Samsung projection sets typically use two STK392-040 IC's, the large black IC's mounted on a large heat sink. If you have never replaced a convergence IC or realigned convergence circuits, allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.

My tv is making a noise. It's 3 years old and has

not really advisable, it is more likely a failing fan bearing. This is an area of High tension and not for amateur DIY's to play around. Capacitors hold 22,000 volts, touch 1 and you are toast ( set does not even have to be on) Have a repair man call rather than the coroner

TV shuts off every few minutes

The problem lies not with the manufacturer but with the technology. While DLP is one of the clearer, crisper rear projection technologies, it is still rear projection, and therefore the most unreliable of the TV technologies, LCDs being the most reliable and the least expensive to fix (relatively speaking). Projection TVs require that the lamp be changed every 2 years (with about 6 hours a day of use) but this can be as often as 6 months to a year for households that use the TV all day long. Lamps cost 150 to 200 dollars in most cases. Beside the lamp, the other parts in the TV can go as you have learned and they are not cheap to repair. I would recommend an LCD tv as they usually manifest problems in the first year (under warranty) if they are going to have any at all. No man-made technology is 100 percent, but I have to say that Samsung is an excellent brand, very high quality, and more features than the competitors. I own one myself (LCD) and have had it for over a year with not a single problem and it gets heavy use as I use it for HD cable, PC monitor, blu-ray, and Xbox 360.

To wrap things up, let me just say that were this problem to be fixed, being a projection TV you might run into these issues in another couple of years again. I would cut my losses and try an LCD (current generation plasmas are also good but they are super expensive to fix if they do break).

I called the 1-800 number for Samsung and got the name of a repair man in Renton, WA. I will speak with him about the potential cost and if it is worth fixing or just let it continue to decline. I do not need your services and do not want to spend $9 to find out where the repair man was.

Thank you for your time.

Is your TV the Toshiba 52hm95? I had a similar problem but my TV went out completely. I had a service tech out this was my light engine and will be $900.00 to 1000.00 to fix. I hope that's not your problem too...Toshiba said they have had no other reports of such a problem with this particular tv.

Samsung HCM5525W TV red blue outlines on images

The Samsung has bad convergence IC's most likly. This should be repair ONLY by a trained technician as a TV set is not a place to experiment or tinker with because of the extremly high voltage inside. This repair should cost you in the range of 250 to 400 bucks . Good Luck
