Try going back to the part store and have them to do a diagnostic readout done....

I don't think your transmission is actually jumping out of gear, But I do believe that your transmission is either low on flued or has a stopped up filter. It could possibly be that the pump is going out in your transmission or even a bad solenoid....
The problem is definately in your transmission...

Try getting back to that part store to get a troubled code read out on their diagnostic computer... Email me the codes at [email protected] and I'll tell you what the code is and how to fix the problem.

I hope this helps...

SOURCE: serpentine belt diagram for my Ford V6 4.2L 97'

Lower left is the tensioner and above should the idler. Sometimes there is a diagram on the fan shroud or near the radiator. Without a picture I hope this makes sense.
Starting with the ac going over the top of its pulley and down to the power steering, to and under the crank shaft, going in and up and around left over the water pump to the tensioner (going under) and to the alternator over the top and then under the idler.

To change the serpentine belt on a 2004 explorer will the timing be affected? ...

No, not at all. The timming belt, or may be a chain on that vehichle? Not sure. But it is under a cover on the front of motor and you have to take everything off of front to even get to it.

The serpentine belt just runs the a/c, alternator, water pump, and powersteering pump.

Change front main seal , leaking oil around timing chain cover. could be seal around harmonica balancer.

yes, I just changed one of these recently. Had to take both front and bottom off engine. Very difficult repair, as there are no good jack points for the engine when you have all the motor mounts off.
Here is procedure I would recommend.
Remove starter and engine to transmission brackets front and back.
Remove transmission starter gear cover.
drain oil and remove oil pan.
put a block under the crankshaft and jack to release weight on motor mount.
remove front motor mount (by serpentine belt)
remove belt.
remove compressor and bracket.
remove crank pulley and vib damper.
remove timing cover. mark timing belt with direction of travel
loosen tensioner gear.
remove timing belt.
remove crankshaft timing gear and key.
remove seal and oil pump housing.
clean gasket surfaces.
replace seal and reverse procedure.

If you have questions, let me know.

How do i put a serpentine belt on a 2004 ford taurus?

look under hood for belt routing diagram, then obtain belt and belt tensioner tool from advance auto and it will be easy. 10 min job. If no diagram draw one yourself then use that for reference.

IS CHANGING THE SERPENTINE BELT SCHEDULED MAINTAINENCE FOR MY 97 ESCORT? IF SO WHAT ELSE HAS TO BE REPLACED AT THAT TIME?

replacing this belt is just insurance that it won't break on you later, depending on how many miles you had driven it so far...it's advise to change the TENSIONER also, this keeps the belt correctly adjusted, check also the IDLER pulleys for bearing type noise and repl as needed...........The other BELT you should maintain is the TIMING BELT for the engine, service it around every 60K and also when doing that repl the waterpump and nec. pulleys.....These Escorts are generally low maint vehicle, and affordable to run....hope this helps you...GL

Is a "starter belt" and a "serpentine belt" the same thing???

No such thing as a "starter belt". If they are refering to the belt that routes around the alternator, part of the power supplying system...then yes. But, this is only if you have 2 seperate belts. A serpentine belt is one entire belt that routes over all of the pulleys. Easy way to check, look at your belt. If you see one, it's a serpentine. If you see two, you have accessory belts. But, you should have a serpentine belt....1 belt.

Your motor has one belt, a serpentine...

Belt inst

For the 3.0L Vulcan, you have a tensioner that is located just below the power steering pully. Use a 15mm wrench or the 15mm shallow well socket that comes in a Serpentine Belt tool to push the tensioner toward the rear of the engine compartment. Take the old belt off and route the new belt. The belt begins at the crankshaft pully, goes under and around the a/c compressor, up around the power steering pump, around (with the flat edge) the idler pully, around the alternator, the flat edge then sits against the tensioner and back around to the water pump pully. You should have a belt routing diagram on the underside of the hood just above the serpentine pully assembly.

Need diagram for placement of serpentine belt for 97 Ford Taurus

Auto Zone has that information on line here. You didn't say what size engine you have or whether it is OHV or DOHC, but according to their numbers, almost 90% of 97 Taurus are 3.0L OHV.
