There are 2 Parts to Fixing this problem. You can do both or just 1. I do recommend that you do both, otherwise your printer might leak ink in a few moths!

1. Remove the ink pads and clean them.

This is not as hard as you might think, lets start.
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Open the front cover of your printer.
- there are 2 screws holding the outer cover of your printer, unscrew them.
- Start lifting the cover up, take a flat srewdriver and on both sites of the printer are nodges, put the srewdriver in and twist it

Most likely the pad will not need cleaning, the Canon software detects the waste ink in a small tank below the pad and causes this error. You can reset the waste ink counter by following the procedure below: 1) With the printer powered off but connected to a power source, press the Power button while pressing and holding the Stop/ Reset button. 2) When the Power is lit, press the Stop/Reset button two times while pressing and holding the Power button. 3) When releasing the Power button and the Stop / Reset button (regardless of order), the printer will move into a service mode. (Waiting for menu selection) 4) When the on/off lights in green, press the Stop/Reset button the specified number of time(s) according to the function listed in the table below.(Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in orange and green, starting with orange.)note: press 4 times for waste ink counter reset. The number of the Reset button pressing LED Function Remarks 0 time Green Power off 1 time Orange Service pattern print 2 times Green EEPROM print 3 times Orange EEPROM reset 4 times Green Waste ink counter reset Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!

Hi, I keep getting an error message that the waste ink absorber on my canon iP 1600 is full. Iknow that by hitting resume fixes the problem temporarily, how can i clean the ink absorber so that the message stops for good?

Posted on Sep 16, 2008

I tried a few times... I have done this alot to many different canon printers. This is what worked for me.

1. Unplug AC (and usb just for good measure)
2. Hold Start while plugging in...
3. While still holding Start press Resume twice.
4. This then allows for Removal of Ink Cartridges(if you are past the limit)... a very important step apparently.
5. Now repeat Step 1... Step 2
6. Now press the Resume 4 times (only blinks for 1st two presses !)
7. Should be ready...

Good luck. I was very happy when this worked for me.

Cleaning Waste Ink Absorber Cannon IP1600 without tearing the whole printer apart(theres no need to, really.)

    Materials needed:
Cotton buds, tissue paper, warm water, long tweezers/ Chopsticks (its quite useful if you know how o use it),toothpick/something with a fine end, torch

1)Unplug the printer. Put it on you desk so its easier to work with.

2)Lift up the cover of the printer. There should be a whitish kind of tape-like ribbon attached to the ink cartridges. The ink cartridges should be the the very right end of the interior of the printer.

3)Gently pull the ribbon the is attached to the cartridges so as to expose the waste ink absorbers that nest directly underneath the original position of the cartridges. For your convenience you can just pull the cartridges to the very end so you have a bigger working area. The waste ink absorbers are really tiny, hard and flat pieces of material that are around 1+ to 2cm long in breath and length.

4)Using a torch, locate the waste ink absorbers (2). They should be held by two small black flaps each. If you are really not sure just use a tissue and feel around. The area where you get a exceptionally much ink stains should be at/pretty near the absorbers. Using tweezers/chopsticks, remove the absorbers carefully(don't lose it). You might wanna clean up the interior abit using cotton buds..

    5) Press each absorber gently in between layers of tissues to get some ink out first. After that just rinse it with warm water. (I just used warm water, but if you have cleaning agents you can go ahead and use them) Dry it in between layers of tissues and air it abit for further drying.

    6) After it is dried you can put them back to their original positions. Keep them in place with the flaps on the sides. The flaps can be easily put in place with the help of toothpick/fine end objects. If you cannot reach the flaps just use the tweezers to help you with it.

    7) Next up, at the base of the interior of the printer you can feel something soft and spongy. It looks like a long grey piece of delicate sponge. Clean that too if it is dirty. Replace it after cleaning and drying. Be careful not to tear it and remember to put it back securely, by using cotton buds to tuck it into place, if not it might interfere with printing process or come lose while printing.

    8) Reset your waste ink counter (there are walk-throughs online) --->http://tricks-collections.com

    9) If not reset your printer. I did.

    [ Step 1 : Manual Temporary
    1. Unplug power and USB.
    2. Open cover and hold power button.
    3. Connect the printer cable.
    4. Close door, then release power button. ] ---credits:http://printertools.blogspot.com/2007/12...

Kay thats all folks! I had a REALLY TOUGH time trying to figure out all these myself, GAWD. Hope my experience will be helpful to you though! :)

I followed Soution #1 and was able to remove ink cartrigdes. But where is the ink absorber located and doesn't that need to be cleaned/emptied if full as indicated by the error message?

Posted on Dec 13, 2009

I can confirm that this (ie. resume x4) works for the iP1500.

Posted on May 15, 2008

I seemed to have solved this by:
Turn off printer
Disconnect cable
Press and hold on button whilst connecting cable
Green button will be on
Press and release resume button
Press and release resume button again
On button should go green and all be well
I turned the printer on and off a couple of times and printed just to check.

I keep getting this error message come up, 'The waste ink absorber is almost full - see manual'.what do I need to do as the manual doesnt give details.

According to the user's manual, "Ink used to clean the print head is absorbed by the waste ink tank. When this message is displayed, the waste ink tank needs to be replaced, or the machine requires maintenance". There is no information about how to replace or empty the waste ink tank.

In any case, you can try the following to clear upo the error, but eventually you'll need the waste tank to be emptied or replaced.

Turn on your MP130.
1) After that press: Menu - Scan - Copy - Scan or Menu-Copy-Scan-Copy-Copy in some models, it depends on the date it was produced)
2) Select TEST MODE.
3) Enter NVRAM ACCESS
4) Select SET ABS-M LEVEL TO 0
5) Select OK
6) Keep selecting OK untill you leave the TEST MODE
Then turn it OFF and again ON. Check if the error message is still there

The following is taken from the Canon website, regarding this specific error:
"Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk."
As I mentioned before, I have not found any way or procedure to replace the waste ink absorber nor the necesary replacement part

Message" waste ink absorber"

There is an absorbent sponge in the bottom of your waste ink container to help contain the waste ink your printer generates when it cleans the print head nozzles. That sponge is probably full and has triggered a "most informative" error message!

Check your user's manual about the procedure for changing the absorber and where to buy new ones.
