I use two Olympus 770's, one is my own and one at work. They were purchased about 6 months apart and both have developed this same problem within 2 months of each other! So far I just remove the batteries to turn them off

The power does not go off. The only way to make it go off is to remove the battery. Not a fun way to take pictures. :(

How weird it is! I cannot get the camera to shut down. It will not change to playback mode or off although the power switch does move to both positions.I called tech support. Cost to repair is average $165 with Olympus. I haven't found anything more reasonable. Trade in value? $57.00 IF it's functioning properly. Seems better to purchase less expensive cameras now. I bought mine in "04. They've improved so many things, but this is as bad as buying new computers every few years. How very disappointing!

Power switch is not turning off

  • kordas Aug 24, 2008

    Hi,

I have similar problem with the on/off switch, but worse ;) The camera
does not switch into the picture mode (3rd from the left on the sliding
switch), and the lense does not extend. I can turn it off and I can
    take movies.

It seems to be a mechanical problem with the switch, which does not
properly connect. The fault has developed without any "shock" to the
    camera.

Any ideas, beyond opening the case? (Costs of repair are above camera's value).

    Thanks,

    PK

my problem is similar to kordas'. camera function will not work but the movie, still, and off functions work. any solutions other than opening the camera and tinkering around? perhaps the last time i buy an olympus.

Olympus customer support I would think is the best place to inquire- especially if is a youngish camera

Never insert or remove a card while the camera is on. You can try to download the pics on the card to your computer using a separate card reader. Then, format the card in the camera.

How do u retrieve photos that have been saved on camera(sp-550 uz)memory not a picture card

With the camera's power off, remove the memory card.

Turn on the camera's power.

Retrieve the photos, as you ordinarily would do, were the memory card still in the camera. If you have the USB cable connected, then you can move the photos to your PC's hard drive, using either the camera's software, or Windows Explorer.

Camera will not turn on. Already replaced batteries.

Hi,

as per your camment you already replace the battry thats means no problem in battery Ok Firstly please follw the steps, remove memory card(if have),power resourses like AC power adaptor and batteries and wait some some just about 10 min, than reinsert the battrie and AC power adaptor, swith on the camera without memory card,if it is work and than insert ithe memory card otherwise reinsurt the memory card correctly and close the memory card door properly if the camera working fine other wise follw the third instuction that check the AC power supply, this is connect properly through input or not.connect the properly and turn on the camera and check issue is resolved
If you not find the solution thats means your camera has been damaged, need the service of camera and second resion is if you insert the battry incorrectly ,some issue
One more resion is images in memory card, firstly download ths images in system and formate the card.
Thanks,

This normally means that you have a faulty xD memory card.

With the power off, remove the card and try cleaning the contacts using a cotton bud (Q-Tip) moistened with a little rubbing alcohol. This is unlikely to solve your problem but costs nothing to try. If it doesn't work then you must try using another xD card and this usually fixes the fault.

If that fails, there is nothing more which you can do other than to consider sending the camera for repair, but you'll find that this is definitely uneconomical unless the camera still has warranty cover as a good used & fully functional example of your camera will cost less than the labour charges needed to fix yours.

To prevent the problem reoccurring it helps if you only ever wipe/reformat the card when it's in the camera: do not use an external card reader except for uploading images.

I hope that you have found my posting to be of some use and ask only that you return the favour by rating my answer.

Camera wont turn on even with new batteries

In order to narrow down the issue, I suggest you the following steps. 1) First of all we have to power drain the Camera. Take out the battries and unplug adaptor, now hold the power on putton ( Click Button) for a minute this will clear the static power on Camera. If this doesn't fix the issue, Than.... 2) As cam is working fine with Ac adaport and batterys are not working you have to check the cam with the new battries. If you store battries for a long time with out using them, they may result in battery drain. If this doesn't work. 3) Then it need a Physical check, where we can track if Power suply from battries are reaching till its destination or not. This is the way to narrow down the issue. Thanks you.
