My router ( wireless G ) is connected to the DSL modom to my desktop getting about 260mps but my laptop is only receving 58 - 68 mps Do I need a differnt router ? May be an G or N

Since your laptop is wireless, G speed is only a maximum of 54 Mbps. N speed is usally 300Mbps.
Now your desktop, if its connected directly to your router with an ethernet cable, its speed can be 10/100/1000 depending on the routers network ports.
You could try to update the firmware of your router from the manufacturer's website.
