Hi, as this is a laptop computer it is not as easy to service as a desktop.
However if you remove the keyboard you will find your cpu and fan accessable from there. I think you probably have a burnt out cooling fan and possibly some damage to the cpu. The service manual is available from the HP web site and this will guide you how to remove the keyboard to get access to the faulty parts.
The question you have to ask is; is the cost of parts and down time woth the gamble for a laptop of thia age?
one idea is to check Ebay and see if you can get another one for parts.

It depends on what burned out. If its the power supply, then no problem, you can get an after market replacement reasonably priced. A plug-in video card is easily replaced as well. If its on the motherboard, it would depend on the part. Unfortunately when something on the motherboard overheats, there's no guaranty that you won't have problems with the operating system freezing-up on you a lot. Usable, but very annoying.
Of course you'll have to look things over closely to find what part. If the fan on the power supply doesn't come on at all, it's a good possibility its bad.

I think you probaly should by a new fan they cost around $50 to $200 if you have a quad prossesor you should by a fan more expensive maby like $100 instead of $50 but if you have a dual core or single porossesor you should probaly buy a $50 doller fan and if you have a new computer it is more easy to intall internal hard if you thing your up to the task to install it your self then unplug the power and open the case up and if you thing you cant do it then bring it in to a computer repair store near you.
