Problem for DISH Network IR Remote Control Remote Control

Dish 20.0 IR Remote works for awhile then it

By lmauer on Mar 17, 2009

" "
Just had Dish (VIP 722) installed 3 days ago.   Dish 20.0 IR Remote for TV 1 works for awhile then it doesn't.   The UHF remote for TV 2 works just fine. Could it be IR interference from our Sony LCD HD tv?  Dish is sending a new remote, but I have a feeling the same thing is going to happen.

Same Problem

-   Interesting discussion; this is my first Satellite TV and after many years of cable -- and I'm starting to regret this!

After I signed for the service the technician came and installed the system and called downstairs for a quick walk thru; half way through demonstration the remote stopped responding. After 30 minutes of troubleshooting he decided to swap the unit with brand new remote and nothing worked. This went on for at least 3-4 hours and decided to call it day and scheduled another appt for the following day.

The next day he came with his colleague and brought with them a powered UHF antena. I was out that day, but they told my wife that our Phillips HDTV is interfering with the IR by absorbing the signal as TV attempts to adjust the brightness automatically in response to the ambient lights. Well, they hooked up everything and it seems to work fine.

When I came back from work, the problem resurfaced again. I've tried everything and still nothing. I called for help and recommeded another visit; since the appt is for another week - I switched back to my cable (still have not cancled it yet). Yesterday and they came back and hooked everything back and run all sort of diagnostic, the darn thing started working. They waited for 30-40 minutes to see if the problem resurfaced again. No problem it work fine and they left.

As I was watching TV late into the night, the darn remote started acting up again. The RED light on the remote control and UHF atena flickers but nothing happens. I rebooted the unit few times and the problem stil there.

My question is -- my cable box (with comparable function - HD and DVR) works just fine with my TV; I'm curious as to why EchoStar have not been able to factor this problem when they buil these units (perhaps IR spetrum that doesn't interfere with the TV or other requipments). I would be interested to know if they have plans to address this? I really don't think is fair to ask customers to disable HDTV's important feature (auto brightness, potentially would have an impact on power saving) just to fix the remote control.

-   I have a similar/same problem. My #1 remote works fine in the daytime, but fails to control the HD receiver at night when the room is dim. I can still control my TV with the DISH remote, but can't control my receiver. I have to turn on all the lights in the family room in order for the remote to work with the receiver. I have a Sony BRAVIA 52" LCD TV.

Anyone know of any fixes? I called DISH technical support and they were no help, they've never heard of this problem. They're going to send me a new remote to see if that helps, wish me luck.

-   I have been doing some online research and have discovered that MAYBE the fluorescent light bulbs in my table lamps are causing interference with the IR remote control for Dish VIP722 receiver. I noticed that most of our problems with the new receiver happen in the early morning and late evening when the lamps are on. I am going to switch out the fluroescent bulbs to regular bulbs to see if this helps and will post solution if it fixes the problem. -   go hogs

-   I am having the same problem. Dish Network has been here four times for this VIP722 receiver we had installed March 10th. They first switched out the remote control, it did not fix the problem. Then they switched out the receiver. The problem is still there. (TV 2 is fine) Last night I was thinking that it works fine before daylight and until around dark, so I got up at 1 AM and tried a couple things. With the table lamps only on, and it dark outside, the remote did not work. With the overhead light on, and the table lamps and it dark outside it did work. I know that sounds nuts, but that was one observation last night. The technicians I talk to over the phone are not help whatsoever and I am ready for them to come get this thing out of my house! -   go hogs

I MAY have a solution!! We too have the VIP722 Dish Network receiver. Ours is the "K" model. I called the place where we purchased the TV and they said that the "brightness" on the TV may need to be turned down. He walked me through this, and it worked. The remote WORKS now!! Our TV is a 40" Sony Bravia that we purchased a couple of months ago. Evidently at night, the TV was so bright in the room, it interfered with the Infared Remote control. By turning down "off" brightness detector on the TV, the IR remote was able to send the signal to the receiver. Our TV is on a cabinet and the receiver is directly underneath on a shelf. I hope this solves your problem and anyone else's that may have this problem with the remote.

- Taco23,
Gld you got your problem fixed. I was so frustrated, and Dish couldn't help me either. Their newest receiver is fantastic, but my Sony Bravia TV was to blame, not the Dish IR remote. Funny thing is, a Dish engineer called me, said they were all scratching their heads.....I told him that I was laying in bed one night and realized that light was the problem so I called my Sony store and a tech walked me through turning off the brightness detector. Dish was very thankful as they were having some complaints like mine....and I told them how to solve the problem. I also asked for a year's free Dish Network service. We'll see if they come through! LOL

Good news bad news of sorts. Yes the LCD TV's are known to cause imteference with the remote and flourescent bulbs are also another source as wellas direct sunlight. Have Dish send you a replacement 21.0 remote which is the one you have for TV2 presently. and follow the instructions provided by Dish below. This will not only resolve your issue but give you better remote control ability from other rooms. Thanks for using Fix Ya.
  1. Confirm you are using a 21.0 replacement 2-way remote.

  2. Put the key in the remote with the green TV1 facing up.

  3. Remove the battery cover on the remote. Verify that the UHR/IR switch configuration is set to UHF.

  4. Verify you have an unobstructed LOS and is within 10 feet of the receiver. You will need to direct the remote toward the receiver for the duration of the System Wizard setup.

  5. Press and hold the number 0 until the pop-up 380 appears on the screen.

  6. Select RECONFIGURE on the screen.

  7. Select TV1 and UHF.

  8. Verify that the correct selections have the purple gem next to them.

  9. Select Continue to initiate date transfer.

Had the same problem. Replaced the receiver and the remote.
Did not fix the problem. Replaced the HDMI cable. Did not fix the problem.

What did fix it permanently was to turn off the automatic brightness control on the Sony LCD.

Works like it should now. Only took 4 months to figure it out. Dish tried to help but they were clueless.

I am a Dish Network Technician and this is a known problem with these 20.0 IR remotes when using them with LCD tvs. It's not every LCD tv but they are working on a solution. One fix for it is to get another UHF tv2 remote and take of the battery cover and flip over the blue 2 tab to the green 1 tab. Then make sure the switch inside the cover is on UHF. Then on the receiver pop open the right door and push the system info button. While system info screen is on tv take the new uhf remote hold down sat button till all other lights up top light up. Then enter a unique uhf code (example 6-14) then press the # button at lower right side of remote. Then press record on remote. This will sync up the new remote to the receiver(remote address for TV1 should have changed on the screen to new unique code you chose.) To verify what uhf codes are being used in your house already just go to each receiver and press menu 6-1-3 this will take you to the sys info screen on all receivers. If you have any other questions on this let me know. You will have to set up the new remote to control your TV functions. If it is for the Sony the tv code is 500 so hold down TV button at top of remote until other lights light up then enter 5-0-0 then # then wait about 10 seconds and press and release sat button at top and you are good to go.

The light sensor is definitely the problem with my Sony KDL-46VE5 TV. I moved the receiver away from the TV as far as the cords would allow also. With the light sensor turned off the remote works after dusk.

Sony Bravia KDL-52V4100, Dish VIP722 I've been having the same problem. Remote working temporarly. Tried replacing the remote. Finally had Dish Tech come today and he said from their tech meeting they have found a solution. Soln: Cover the receiver remote sensor with white paper. The sensor is located below the colorful lights. So far so good. Kind of strange but they said the problem arise with certain LED TVs. An earlier post said the problem maybe the light sensor. Some research needs to be conducted on this phenomenon.

- Turn VIP722 and TV off for 45 min then tried to use the remote and it would not work. Tried earlier post that said turn off the light sensor and the remote works again. It appears my Sony sends out a knock out wave to the VIP722 remote. Now I think it's up to Sony to provide a hardware fix. Will call them tomorrow.

We've been having the same problems with the Remote not working for a brand new Dish VIP722k receiver...just installed today! Worked great while the installer was here, then not even 2 hours later, dead in the water...no control from the remote.
The only thing that worked is if I placed my thumb on the receiver to directly cover the remote sensor itself. Then the remote would respond. Weird. I then read someone's posting about the "Brightness Detector" on the actual TV may need to be changed. We have a Sony Bravia recently purchased.
I just turned the Brightness Detector "Off".
Problem Solved!!!
Remote is responding accurately now.

go hogs hit the target dead on in my case. I had to turn off the room "brightness" mode in order for my remote to work again at night. I guess that sensor was somehow interfering with the IR on the remote, go figure. Thanks go hogs!
