To my knowledge and on most Panasonic UK/Euro models/versions, error code "U81" indicates glitch in the firmware, specifically, on its initial diagnostic mode, the system could not detect "Freeview" signals. The concern might have been caused by the absence of an incoming TV signal. Should this hold true, I then suspect that there is nothing wrong with the Panasonic unit but rather the Freeview service in your location or configuration/settings of the provider signals or the tuner.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

This is one of several error codes generated by the main microprocessor IC which are
tripped by corruption, preventing proper operation and which may require the
processor to be reset (where practical) or replaced.
The U81 and U80 codes don't mean anything in particular because the corruption error could be caused by a number of different reasons. It does not point to any specific one fault. This is where the confusion sets in as to the origin of the 'error code' in any device.
U81 means (in technical terms) 'microprocessor communication malfunction' on the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' or 'microprocessor feedback information error'.
This is not something the user should undertake to repair themselves; it should really go to an authorised Panasonic repair centre. The cost depends on the parts used and the labour, however, it is not unfixable. You can always get a quote on this and a second opinion, then decide for yourself if it is economical or not.
I posted this 'advice' for this model previously. The DMR-EX75 and DMR-EX85 are prone to U81 - which is a common error code.
