SOURCE: how do I wind trimmer line on double spoools for ryobi

Okay, so the good news is that YOU are probably not stupid. If you have a Ryobi trimmer like I do, it might have taken you a while to figure out the "secret" on how to rewind the line. If you only had to learn the lesson once, you are smarter than I am. (I'm leaving myself a note for next time).

If you wind the line the wrong way, you go through line really fast until it clogs up inside the bump head and you are forced to try again. The trimmer has an arrow on the spool for the direction to re-wind the line. Think of it this way, TURN THE SPOOL IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ARROW! Don't do what I did and rewind the line in the direction of the arrow, that would be wrong.

Whether this is a "mistake", a way to sell more trimmers/parts/line, or simply bad tranlation from Japanese to Engrish, it really doesn't matter. You don't need to buy anything with the exception of new line.

Good Ruck,

Mark

SOURCE: Ref: Stihl FS46 string trimmer. Broken Flex shaft.

Remove orange sheild, remove single screw holding head in shaft then grab head with pliers and twist side to side until complete head is free. You should then be able to grab part of shaft. On power head loosen screws {about one turn each} that hold two white case halves near trigger,I think there are four, then there is a single torx screw on the bottom of lower case half in the middle that must be taken out to allow tube to be removed.Romove flexshaft from top.Check 4 plastic burnt to flexshaft,if there is you must replace tube liner as well, usally around bent part of tube the liner will go bad.

SOURCE: I cannot remove the head

Being new, I'd return it if the the head flew off. When you say head I see the Engine head coming off and the engine be a total mess. What part are you actually talking about. Is it plastic or aluminum? Here is a link to PDF doc that you can download. If your talking about the part with the string that cuts, which I think you are, you need to screw it back on and make sure you have a something that is locking the screw in place while you screw it down. You can use the special tool that should have been included with the weed eater or use a Phillips head screwdriver in the locking hole to hold that mounting bolt steady for you. I found a pretty good picture of the process in the manual I found here :

Its possible that the drive shaft is broken or the end of the shaft is worn where it hooks into the gear head. The trimmer head has a hex fitting that meshes with the gear assembly in order for it to turn, its possible the hex is worn on the cutting head from usage, which would require replacing the outer spool assembly. Ryobi plt-2543y engine runs okay but head will not

Ken it sounds like the shaft isn't going in to the spigot on the engine. Make sure that the head is on properly and that the shaft is in the spigot itself. If there has been any movement with the head creeping down slightly the shaft will no longer go into it. Try and straighten the shaft slightly to give a couple of millimeters more to the shaft.

Ryobi grass scorpion rct2800a head keeps coming off. Is there a screw or bolt to hold the head in the housing?

I see the spool shaft on the spool and not the drive cable. ALL my trimmers were designed for the line spool to come off the shaft (usually by removing the plastic bump feed nut). Your drive shaft appears to have a groove in it about 3/4 toward the top. I surmise that notch is where a broken/missing set screw or "c" clip would most likely hold the shaft to the drive cable. If you find it to be true, a factory part would not ne needed to find a replacement part to lock the shaft and drive cable.

Ryobi Reeleasy line trimmer head PROBLEM

sounds like the clip isn't engaging properly. For a bump and feed they have steps that lock when enough cord is set out. If the head is not locked when its on it will recoil in. Try to make sure its not sitting wrong.

The flex shaft drive you are referring to is only sold as a assy that I am aware of. You can try www.partstree.com for the replacement shaft assy. you are refering to, however you may find out by the time you buy a new shaft assy you may be money ahead just buying a new trimmer.

Head will not drive. Can feel it slip between nut and motor.

inside the shaft is a flexible drive cord, at each end is usually a hex or torx head fitting that slides into a sleeve, theese can sometimes strip or even snap off and need replaced. remove one end of the shaft (either the engine or the spool) and the cord should slide right out easily. inspect each end for stripping and to make sure it didn't snap off inside the sleeves.
