Question about Hayward Pool & Spa

Super pump 11 keeps blowing the threaded adaptor off the discharge. I replaced the 11/2 inch pvc adapter twice. Both times the adaptor blew off. Any ideas.

Something is causing the pump to "dead head" which means it is trying to pump water through a closed pipe. Check any valves, the filter, heater etc.. downstream from the pump. Your water flow is being severely restricted. Hope that helps.

To confirm that you may have a "Dead Head" situation, or not: do you see water returning back to the pool? Is water being drawn into the skimmer as usual. If so, then you do not have a dead head situation and that is not the reason for the threaded fitting to keep blowing off. If you do NOT see water returning back to the pool or there is no suction at the skimmer, then you DO have a closed valve on the plumbing after the pump on the way back to the pool. Is filter valve in normal Filtering position, If any valves are installed on return line, ensure they are open: Ball valves will have handles going with pipe to be open, handles across the pipe are closed. Gate valves will have a round handle and turned "Counter Clockwise all the way is open - ensure the gate is turning, so close by turning clockwise, then counter clockwise. Jandy or Compool look like a ball valve but the handle "NEEDS" to be across the pipe to be open! There is a little triangular looking "Flag" opposite the handle and you will see the word "Off or Closed" on it. When that flag is over the pipe/port, it is closed! So, move it so there is no pipe under it.
Another dead head or high resistance is a very "Dirty / Clogged" filter. Try cleaning it.

I have installed a new pb4 pump and it keeps blowing off the hoses on the top side out to pool. I have checked for obstrustions in lines, I have siliconed my connections, i have lowered my psi thru return...

I assume you are talking about the flexible hose that is connected with a threaded collar and clamp the hose to the fittings. This can be caused by vibration, warn parts, high pressure or collar not tightened sufficiently. If the parts were installed with the previous pump then they may be worn. If you tried replacing the the fittings then you may want to change the parts to PVC fittings and piping instead. About half of the booster pumps I have seen were connected using PVC piping. I hope this helps.

What size npt thread is the adaptor

Common American National Standard Pipe Taper Threads
  • NPT - National Pipe Thread Taper
  • FPT - female (internal) National Pipe Taper threads
  • MPT - male (external) National Pipe Taper threads
  • NPTF - Dryseal American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread (ANSI B1.20.3)
For NPT threads a sealant compound or Teflon tape must be used for a leak-free seal. For NPTF no sealant is needed for a sealing.
Characteristics of NPT (also known as ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 Pipe Threads, General Purpose):
  • tapered thread 1o 47'
  • truncation of roots and crests are flat
  • 60o thread angle
  • pitch is measured in threads per inch
Note! Pipe sizes do not refer to any physical dimensions. The outside diameter of a pipe or fitting must be measured and compared to a table for size identification. A 3/4" NPT pipe thread has an outside diameter - OD - of 1.050 inches.
Each thread size has a defined number of threads per inch - TPI, or pitch. The 3/4" NPT pipe thread has 14 threads per inch. Both the TPI and OD of the thread are required for positive identification of thread size because more than one size have the same TPI.
NPT - American Standard Pipe Thread Taper 1) Pipe Size

NPT threads are not interchangeable with NPS - National Pipe Straight - threads.
NPT threads may look similar to ISO 7/1 threads. However, ISO and NPT threads should not be mixed. ISO threads have 55o taper angle versus 60o for NPT. The NPT root and crest configurations are also different from ISO. For ISO threads pitch is usually measured in millimeters (may be expressed in Inch). The pitch are different.

Need help downsizing pool pump connection

Okay. I think I gotcha covered.

I have one mocked up here right in front of me.

Still going on the PVC pipe assumption...

- Install a PVC 1 1/2 " - 1" reducer on the new pump nipple.

- Install a short piece (nipple) of 1 1/2" PVC pipe in the reducer installed on the pump

- Install an 1 1/2" MIP adapter (PVC) on the 1 1/2 " nipple

- Screw the hose onto the threaded 1 1/2" MIP adapter.

There are several ways to do this -- the above is a good way.

Have you ever mated PVC piping/adapters with solvent? I can help you with the details of this if your unfamiliar with it...

Broken garden hose adaptor

We have the same pump and problems. I have attempted a few fixes with PVC sealant and hose clamps to the current adaptor, however the adapter is still continuing to crack. The adapter is removable- carefully so as to not damage the small eyelet it attaches to, (or in our case, it came off on it's own) and can be replaced by any adapter that fits- they can be found all over at lowes or home depot. I am personally going to try using a broken hose and clamping it directly to the eyelet. This is not a good reason to buy a new pump- they fix too easy!

Inlet pvc pipe broke off and is in face. is pvc threaded or not?

Get a screwdriver (or something strong like that) that is the diameter of the pipe only. Use a torch to heat it up and then press it into the pvc...might take a couple times to get a good indent, and then turn....it is threaded 3/4" pvc....some installers will actually glue this fitting in the pump - which render it unuseable in this situation....
