Check the relief valve, drain and element's,water lines to make sure that they are not the source of the leak. If the tank is leaking you may be able to fix it for now.

The tank depending on condition of the tank if it is pretty sound. Clean up the area of the hole with sand paper. Go to any hardware store and get a JB Weld two part kit. JB Weld will fix almost anything . You can go to www.jbweldit.com for more information about this product. I wish you well and hope this will fix it for you.

SOURCE: I have a rheem heater

Unless you see a large hex head socket to remove on the top of the water heater, many
anode rods are built onto the hot side nipple. They are almost the length of the water heater.
Hopefully you have room to remove it if this is the case. If you see a hex nut that is silver
gray on top, then shut off cold water to the heater. Release some hot water at a tap to relieve
pressure on the tank or drain some out at the bottom which is better. Make sure power is
off to unit first or gas is off . Unscrew nut or nipple counterclockwise to remove. Best to
remove with a socket wrench or box wrench if it's a nut and a good pipe wrench if it's
on the nipple. Several light taps with a hammer if necessary on the handle of the
wrench or pipe wrench should help. Hopefully the nipple has a removable flex line if
it's located there. (Remember it's on the hot side and should be marked on the top
of the heater).

Does an Intertherm water heater model HSE 30F 240S have a dip tube? Cold water comes n on the side of the tank not on top or bottom.

How to Repair or Replace Defective Water Heater Dip Tubes

www.familyhandyman.com > Skills > Plumbing
The role of the dip tube is to direct incoming cold replacement water to the bottom of the tank for heating. While it warms, the dense, cold water stays naturally segregated from the warmer, lighter water floating on top. The water for faucets and appliances comes from the hot layer on top.

How and where does the water go in

The cold water enters the top, but the water is not released into tank at the top. The cold water goes through a "dip tube" This takes the cold water to the bottom of the tank. If you dip tube fails, or breaks, your faucet temperature will slowly drop as you use hot water (vs giving you 60% of tank at full temperature before temperature starts dropping) In normal operation, the cold water is released near bottom of tank, the hot water rises to top, and comes out of the top of the tank.

I have Rheem model 41V50 leaking from the top...The top is a lid with screw....can I buy and replace the top ?

No.
Replace tank.
Buy 40 gallon from local Lowes and install yourself.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html

Under thin metal shell is a welded steel tank, surrounded by insulation and then covered with painted metal shell. The shell is what you look at.
The inside steel tank is made to withstand high pressure expansion that comes with heating water.
The steel tank has rusted out.
Turn gas control valve to vacation, so pilot light stays on, and then only heat enough water as needed until you can replace tank.

Prevent next tank from rusting by replacing anode rod, and ground water pipes.

How does rhe hot and cold water hook up on a 71-40d which is which top and bottom

Tanks are marked with Hot and Cold.
1) If water connections are on top of tank, look for red marking or word HOT that shows where hot water pipe connects. Look for blue marking or word COLD that shows cold water connection.
2) If water connections are on side of tank, cold water connects to bottom one, and hot connects to top.

3) If hot and cold are reversed, the tank will not work.
Pipes on top of tank: cold water enters tank and is sent to bottom of tank in a long tube called the dip tube. This means the cold is on the bottom since hot water rises to the top. The hot water exits top of tank.
Pipes on side of tank: You want cold water to enter bottom, so hot water naturally rises to the top outlet.

Have a new electric tank, top element wont come on,replaced thermostat 3 times top element comes on once but next morning not enough hot water&top element wont come on,can someone help? thanks

The top element only comes on when the heater is about out of water. The water is directed to the bottom of the tank. Cold water stays on bottom, Bottom heater element heats water. If you use all that water then the top of the tank gets cold and the top element comes. When the top of the tank is warm, then the bottom element comes on. I would susupect the bottom element as it does most of the work. If you have an ohm meter, turn off electric, and remove wires from element. Check element for continuity. If you don't get reading, then that element is bad.

Hot water comes out cold side for few seconds and gets cold, no hot from hot side, only cold

Make sure that the water pipes for the cold water coming in and the hot water going out are connected to the correct positions on the water heater. If the connections get reversed, the water that is supposed to be hot will be drawn from the bottom of the tank and will not be as hot as it should be. The cold water input goes to the bottom of the tank. The hot water out comes from the top of the tank.

I installed a now 40 gal. electric water heater, made by Reliance, problem: I have power going to the top thermostat and element, but there is no power going to the bottom element.please help, thanks Mike...

How they work. First you need to know that cold water goes into the tank near the bottom (because of the "dip tube" inside the tank) and hot water is taken out at the top. Also hot water naturally rises.
so... when the tank is full of cold water the top element will come on and heat up the top 1/3 of the water then the bottom element will come on and finish heating the rest of the tank.
