Question about Refrigerators

Kitchenaid superba 42 refrigerator freezer not cooling. Model: KSSP42QFB05

Kitchenaid superba 42 refrigerator not cooling. Replaced Defrost timer and it ran for a few days and stopped cooling. Shut power off and turned back on, and it ran for a few more days. I then changed the overload and the compressor relay. It ran for a day and again its not cooling. It looks like the defrost timer is getting stuck in the defrost mode.

I've tried to troubleshoot the defrost thermostat, and it is seems to be working properly. It seems that I can continuously reset the freezer by turning the power off and then on again. Something is tripping. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've checked the defrost heater, and it is working.

It could be the defrost termination switch if it has one as well. They are normally mounted on the side of the Evaporator coil in the freezer. About 1" in diameter.

I took it out and held it in my hand and heard it click, which tells me the circuit opened. At that point my OHM meter stopped buzzing.

SOURCE: Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

SOURCE: refrigerator Compressor hot to touch & fridge/freezer not cooling

you need to do an amp draw with your meter, clamp the run wire on the compressor, you should get 2-5 amp reading, any higher means the compressor is going bad, also should be a locked rotor amp(LRA) reading on comp.-mike

SOURCE: ROPER RS22AQXMQ SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR PROBLEM

I had the same problem with a top freezer. I found that the thermostat was bad by tapping on the it at the setting knob. The defrost timer was replaced first which did not help (repairman put in a timer for a Frigadair which will not work in a Roper). If one is used for a frigadair as soon as it cycles it will not work again until it is unplugged and allowed to reset. I replaced both the thermostat and the right defrost timer. It has worked great for over 2 months.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Gets stuck in defrost cycle, new thermostat already fitted

If you would like to stop the defrost timer from intermittently causing this, the defrost timer will need to be replaced. It's a simple part to replace and not expensive. Thanks, Sea Breeeze

FRIDGE AND FREEZER QUIT COOLING

you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Refrigerator side not cold

if you have frost build up on rear wall of freezer section then your unit is not going through defrost. its either defrost heater, defrost thermostat (which are both located on evaporator) or defrost timer

Freezer is only cool, everything melting

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
