SOURCE: Pull cord on chain saw will not retract.

Most of the rancher models are easy to look at. Take the four screws off that hold the starter cover on.When off have a look to see if the pulley is ok or one of the starter dogs(pawls) is jamed . If dogs ok take the screw out of the centre of pulley and remove it ,check for spring tension. if there is just be carful to leave sring in housing. look at spring if broken or out of shape renew it and rope.check for cracks in pulley. When renewing spring and rope get correct rope length and diameter. don't over tension new spring. hop this helps

SOURCE: Poulan 16" cannot start...pull cord locked up

Remove the cover, should be 4 screws that holds it on once the 4 screws are loosened the rope could rewind on its own. If not check to make sure the spring is not broken.

SOURCE: recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn't retract pull rope

Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.

How do I replace a pull cord for pm 605 mcculloch chainsaw?

First remove the pull starter housing.
The next part is tricky. You'll have to release and unwind the spring that rewinds the pull starter cord. Remember how you do this because after replacing the cord, you'll have to rewind the cord and spring before inserting it back in the housing.
re-attach the pull cord housing to the chain saw.
Hope this helps.

I have a Craftsman 3.5 hp 16" Electric Chain Saw that I haven't used in year. Are their key steps to clean-it up operationally before I use it or start it?

Kcbriangerli:

I would first clean the saw... especially the chain drive area (remove the cover first and use compressed air if you have a compressor). Check the drive sprocket for excessive wear. Check the power cord for any damage. pull up on the chain at the middle of the bar to ensure the chain is not too loose or too tight (the chain should be able to be pulled up one eighth of an inch... no more. None of the dogs at the inside of the chain should come completely out of the slot in the bar. If the chain is too loose, adjust it by reinstalling the cover, ( When you put the cover on, make sure that the small nib on the chain tensioner fits in the small hole in the bar). loosen the two chain bar retention nuts and adjust the screw at the front of the main body next to the bar. When the adjustment is correct, tighten the chain bar retention nuts and check the chain tension again. If you have a chain sharpener, now would be a dandy time to sharpen your chain.

How to put a new pull rope on it How do I put a new pull rope on

It realy depends on what model we are talking about, so i will give a general disciption, remove the four screws retaining the starter to the saw, remove the starter, if the cord is still under tention, pull the starter handle out approx 8", whilst held out hold the pulley to stop it retracting, let go the starter handle and unwind the now lose cord from around the pulley, once enough cord has been unwound let the pulley slowly turn until all the spring tention has gone, remove the center fixing screw, and remove the pulley, pull the old cord away, refit a new suitable diameter cord, knot the end and pull the cord into the pulley so as the knot sits flush into the hole in the pulley, wind the cord fully around the pulley, now refit the pulley to the cover, refit the centre screw ,push the other end of the cord through the cover eyelet and refit the starter handle with a suitable knot, now wind the cord around the pulley a further two times by turning the pulley and winding up the spring, allow the spring to pull the cord in, if required wind the pulley a further turn until the cord is suitably tentioned in the cover, replace the cover on the machine, pull the cord out to make sure it has engaged fully into the pawls before fully tightening the fixing screws.

My Craftsman lawn mower starter cord doesn't retract after mower starts.

I have had this situation before on a lawnmower. I didn't have a craftsman, but is probably the same issue. Basically, the spring that recoils the cord back in either broke or came unwound. When the mower is not running, the cogs on the pull chord keeps the cord from coming out. When the mower is running, the spring is not wound enough to hold the chord in and thus releases or doesn't hold it in.
Try pulling the pull chord assembly off and rewind the spring.

Chain saw chain stopped moving

Was it running and shut down and was froze or when you went to restart it was frozen? Two things I have seen cause this other than a seized engine. One - chain bound up. Remove side cover and inspect chain mechanism. Two- the pull cord is bound up. Remove the pull cord cover and inspect.

Not that i know of, take the cover off and rewind by hand, use greese on the coil and pull the rope in and out, if the rope doesnt recoil you are going to need a new pull start assembly

Craftsman 17" 25cc Trimmer...pull cord stuck

it's doubtful that bad gas caused this, it sounds like the cord was back-lashed and partially came off the recoil pulley. Remove the recoil cover and ensure the cord is all on the pulley, make sure the rewind mechanism works smoothly before re-installing.
