All DVD's, CD's, or just one? What is the Format of the Disk? Is it a Home Made disk? You can try to clean the Laser with one of these: http://www.google.com/#q=laser+cleaner&hl=en&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=dPmMUfTtGIOm8QSShYDwBw&sqi=2&ved=0CDYQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.46340616,d.eWU&fp=22cc289d1aeb76b8&biw=1024&bih=659

Thank you for your quick response. I used two DVDs that were from a store. I have cleaned the optic cell and it still reads no when you insert a DVD.

I assume the two DVD's work on another machine. Well the obvious, I'm a genius for the obvious, the DVD player is defective, broken. Is it's under warranty? You purchased the DVD player in the U.S. and your using U.S. DVD's?

There's not much you can do. You cound open it and look for loose connections, but, as you know, if a component is bad, unless you intend to troubleshoot a Circuit Board, it may be dead.

SOURCE: dvd player refuses to read any disc I load into the machine

Hello I was looking to try and help you with your DVD player, we will start by loading a music cd store purchased, no burned cds please, if the cd loads and plays then your dvd player is either out of adjustment or going bad, most dvd players, i have worked on, will load and play a music cd, but will show loading errors when trying DVD's. If the music cd dosen't load then there could be an issue with the drive or tray. If the music cd plays just fine, then your laser is either out of adjustment or going bad. You can call the manufacuter to see if there is a process for resetting the DVD player, not all DVD players have this option, if resetting the DVD player dosen't work, but music cd's do then your laser lens is dirty or going bad. At this point you have three options 1) Take it to a repair shop, 2) Get an new one, 3) Get your hands dirty if your really handy and know what your doing to clean and replace the laser. I hope I can be of further assitance and I look forward to helping in the future, Thank You and have a nice day.

SOURCE: Toshiba DVD SD-3980SU2 or SC2 player loads every disc as "bad disc"

Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit.
If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

SOURCE: toshiba reads no disc

Dust infiltration is a likely culprit. Unplug the unit, open the case. Take a cotton swab and wet it with a small amount of glass cleaner. Gently wipe the laser lens several times without applying pressure, then use the other end to finish cleaning it off and to dry it. Often, so much dust gets inside these units and coats the objective lens it can't see the disc anymore. Give it a try, might work after this operation. I've fixed many CD & DVD players this way. If that doesn't work, take a can of compressed air and blow out dust from inside the laser by pointing the nozzle to the open space between the lens and the lens cover. Hold the can at least three inches away so as not to damage the internal workings of the laser assembly. Several short/sharp bursts of air might dislodge dust that has accumulated inside the laser housing.

When loading cd, it says bad

It's likely there is dust on the CD player lens. Many DVD units have two lens units, one for DVD's and the other for CD. You will to clean the CD one.

DVD player won't play DVD, says "load"

The unit can recognize that a disc has been loaded but can not read the contents. This can be as simple as a dirty lens or more drastic like failing optics. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to correct the problem and a music CD will play OK, then the optics are failing. DVDs require more laser power to read than a music CD.

If the disk is not dirty, smudged up or scratched -- it is likely the laser pickup getting weak or the spindle motor not keeping at the right speed. If you have to clean the disc, wipe from the center out with a clean soft cloth.
