You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods.
1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor.
2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times.
Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :-
IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7
HP and Compaq = Fn + F4
Toshiba = Fn + F5
ASUS and Dell = Fn + F8

Lenovo g550 laptop with an external monitor would only display of broken original screen after crash dump

Firstly you need to get your external monitor working. Have you tried pressing FN+F3 while turned on, (may take several presses).

If you can get the external monitor working then you'll need to run windows in safe mode and try removing any new drivers you installed. or try a 'Last Known good' on start up this depends on the OS version.

When the computer is starting up PRESS & HOLD the "F" key which controls the external monitor. It may be F4, F5, F6. You should get image on the external screen. Go into video properties and select dual monitors or allow computer to use external display or something like that.

External monitor only works if I start windows vista in safe mode

First after you boot it up normally (not Safe Mode) can you move the mouse far to the left or to the right do you see the mouse. If you do see the mouse pointer you are running dual monitor mode and the laptop screen is set as the primary monitor. You have to run it in Save Mode and set the external monitor as the primary monitor. Hit the Start button then select Help+Support and in the search box enter "dual monitors". Read how to set up the primary monitor.

Second maybe you need to activate the external monitor. When laptops boot normally (not Safe Mode again) with a external monitor connected you have to hit the Fn (function) key (probably blue near Alt key) and some other number key (it probably has a blue monitor symbol on it) I'm not sure which one. This key sequence is a toggle sequence. In other words when you boot a laptop it goes directly to the laptop screen then the first time you do a Fn + number key combination it will turn on the external monitor and turn off the laptop screen the next time you push Fn+number key it will turn on both monitors (external and laptop screen) the third time it will turn on only the laptop screen and so forth.

this is from the manual for your computer. you need to get it on both monitors simultaneously.

When you start the computer with an external device (such as an external monitor or projector)
attached and turned on, the image may appear on either the computer display or the external
device.
Press <Fn><F8> to switch the video image between the display only, the external device only,

Laptop Monitor Problem - I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I had a system crash and I think I may have had a second problem with my monitor on my laptop showing, it went black and flickers on and off. ...

Possible disconnect of the wiring harness from the LCD to the motherboard? Might just need a new screen, but always check the simplest first. Flickering may imply faulty wiring or a lose connection in my opinion.

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 1356LMi laptop. It

This problem is mostly likely with your LCD screen. It needs to be replaced. I suggest you connect your laptop to an external computer monitor and see if you still see the same issue on the external monitor. If you don't see it, then for sure it is not your motherboard or graphic chip. It has to do with your screen. In rare cases this can also happen if your wiring for the LCD screen is going bad or damaged.

Once you connect the external computer monitor to your laptop, turn your laptop on and located the "FN" and "F4 or F5 key depending on the laptop model" key on your laptop. Hold FN down and hit the F4 key once and see if the screen switches to your external monitor. If not, hit it again and wait.

Some newer laptops auto detect external monitors when they are connected to one.

My screen on my Dell Inspiron Notebook went black. But I can barely see on the screen that the computer ran a problem check and said my computer was having a problem starting.

The invertor lamp has gone bad, so you would need to replace the LCD screen. there is nothing else you can do. try to connect an external monitor adn then press Fn + F8 to switch the video to the external monitor. if the image on the external monitor is fine then its the lcd. if the external monitor has the same image then motherboard problem. you can also try Fn + Up arrow key to increase the brightness.
