SOURCE: what evap coil can be efficiently used with a 10 seer rheem raka-024jaz condenser

Hello, if the outside condenser is 2 ton than the inside evap coil should be 2 ton aswell. There are 12,000 btu's per ton and the number 024 in the model # represents btu's per ton so you have a 2 ton unit.

What's wrong with your current AHU? Any Ruud dealer can assist you. Most 4 ton units work with r-22 or 410a. As a side note, most parts in an air handler can be replaced unless the case is rusted thru.

Replacement for 20yr old A/C system

I you have a 2.5 ton condenser on a 3 ton coil, and he gave you an estimate for a 1.5 ton condenser only, he missed something, or you need a second estimate. Now if give you an estimate for a complete system, with a 1.5 ton condenser/evap, coil, your ductwork will/may be oversized for that unit. Need a second estimate. You've been happy with a 2.5 ton cooling capacity in the past, don't settle for anything less, unless you've completely updated with new doors, windows, insulation, ect.... I'd call around and ask for an estimate, with a load, and then ask for the cooling tonnage and furnace BTU's from that load, when they call with the price. Most reputable companies will/can prove a proper load calculation and my city just made it mandatory to prove a load was achieved when a permit is pulled due to the Dept. Of Energy passing laws on this subject in 2015. Ask if its mandatory for a load calc. if they pull a permit. And they are supposed to pull a permit in city limits I'm sure. It's not a good practice to miss match systems with current designs. 20+ years ago it was, but now there are codes against this practice. And also shortcuts to try to make more money with less invested may not be considered GOOD PRACTICE. Hope this helps!

I have a goodman cased evap coil that has a cracked drain pan...the service tech wants to sell me a $900.00 evaporator asm telling me that the drain pan cannot be replaced or repaired.

All you need to buy is a drain pan. Although depending on how your evap coil is encased you may have to pull the evap to get the drain pan in.

Can I mix brands/tons when installing AC unit to existing coils?

First off - the 'rule of thumb' is 600' per ton of Air Conditioning. In other words your old unit is a 2 ton unit. So - 2 tons x 600' = 1200'. As you can see if you install the 2.5 ton unit - you will be installing a AC that 'could' cool a 1500 sq ft house (2.5 x 600' =1500 sq ft.). Slightly more than what you need; and the 3.5 ton unit is 'way to big,' (3.5 x 600' = 2100 sq ft.).

Note: fyi - many in the AC business will sometimes refer to tonnage in btu's, i.e. 1 ton = 12000 btu - hence a '2 ton unit' can also be referred to as a 24000 btu unit and vice versa.

So... from the above - you can easily see that "2 tons" of Air conditioning is what is required to cool the 'average' home of 1100 sq ft. "roughly speaking."

Note: it is always best to have a professional 'size' your cooling/heating needs.

One of your questions was could you 'mix tonnage?'

The answer is 'usually you don't mix the tonnage of your outside/inside units.' However, professionals sometimes do (mix the tonnage) in certain situations, and installing a 2.5 ton outside unit with an existing 2 ton inside unit is often done, however, there are some 'tech issues' here and - I would "again" recommend that you call a Service Tech to help you with the sizing/mixing of your cooling/heating needs.

hope this has helped

I have a Lennox CH23.51 series coil unit using R22 freon installed one year ago. Compressor is 9 years old. Down the road when replacing compressor (R410A ), will CH23.51 unit be compatible after changing...

This evaporator core is R-22 / R-410A compatible. The Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) is for R-22. If retrofitting to R-410A, a new TXV metering device would be required, but the evap. core itself could be re-used (as long as you stick with the same Tonnage you have now). If upgrading to a higher tonnage system (like going from 4-Ton to 5-Ton), then you would need a totally new evaporator core.
