SOURCE: Singer Starlet 353 Thread tension

you need to do a tension assembly check.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";}Tension assembly test. To do this test. Pull the threadthrough the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is workingcorrectly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 orsomething in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through thetension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. Itshould pull noticeably harder.)
If it doesn’t work this way then you probably have a pieceof thread or lint stuck inside the tension discs. To remove it, turn thetension to 0 zero and raise the presser foot.Using a small screwdriver, openthe space between the discs and spray with canned or compressed air. The stuffshould come out. Do the tension test again to make sure you got everything andthen try sewing again.

SOURCE: How do i set thread tension on a 306W Singer

Top tension about 4 or 5, make sure the presser foot is up when you theread the machine, make sure you can just pull the bobbin thread through with some slight resistence, if it is too tight slacken the screw on the bobbin case a quarter of a turn at a time anti clockwise.

Please expand your explanation of what exactly the machine is or is not doing. We can't begin to help without more information.

HINT: remove the top thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.

I have singer 4423.The needle thread in bunching up in the bobbin case and not sewing! When it didn't pick up bobbin thread I loosened bobbin tension which fixed that problem.

Sounds like bird nesting.

Install a brand new needle.

Remove the upper thread completely. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Make sure it is threaded correctly according to the manual.

Set the upper tension to the midway point between high & low numbers. Retest on a scrap of fabric.

P.S.--once you get the upper tension correct, you may find you will need to readjust the bobbin tension.

Also make sure that your needle, thread, and fabric are compatible.

How do you thread a singer merritt 1872?

Wow, one of the few Singer machines that doesn't have a free download manual. Hmmm..... Ok looked up a photo of your machine. It's pretty easy.

1. raise your presser foot.
2. Put thread on spool pin.
3. draw thread over to and under from behind of the pre-tension disc at top
4. Draw thread down from the right and under the tension dial to seat the thread into the tension discs and flex that spring a little.
5. Through the take up lever.
6. Down through the thread guide.
7. Down through the needle bar thread guide.
8. Through the needle.

Hope that helps.

Fix tension on Singer 4552SW

The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight--if tension is too tight back
off one number or letter at a time, if thread is too loose increase
one number or letter at a time till you get the correct stitch
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle
8.also check to make sure the top thread has not come off the thread
take up lever

Featherweight 132Q Singer sewing machine. The top thread is loose. How do I fix that?

try adjusting the top thread tension to a lower number,,like if the machine tension is on 2 then take the tension up to 3 & if that doesn't give the correct tension go to 4 & see if that tension is good for the correct stitch

I can't fix the tension on the machine Singer 5062. I am getting loops on the bottom

Try this little trick, rethread it and then with the presser foot up pull on the top thread, it should move smoothly, now put the presser foot down, the thread should barely move. This sometimes seats the thread in the tension discs the right way. I have my tension set at 3 but each machine is different.

How do I fix the bottom tension if the thread is forming big loops underneath when the top tension button is set on 6?

Your top threading is not correct. Rethread and do this test, with the presser foot up, pull on the top thread, it should be smooth, that means it is seated in the discs right. Now lower the presser foot and pull on the thread, it should hardly move. I think that your tension is too high, lower to 3 or 4.
