SOURCE: Food steamer instructions

Oh yes, and good for the cholesterol too! But dont overcook them that they become soft and mushy, or all the nutrient value from the veggies will be lost.

Well, I'm glad you were able to sort that out. I tried looking for the manual, but unfortunately, couldn't find one anywhere. However, if I find one in the future , I will get back to this post and let you know.

In the meantime, could you kindly take a moment to assign a FixYa rating so we can lock his post, and I can get back here when I do find one; or else it will be incredibly difficult for me to find this post again...

Thanks in advance ,

How to Steam Vegetables in your Rice Cooker

One of the extra benefits of having a Rice Cooker is that you can also use it very effectively as a steamer for your vegetables. It is very simple to do and also works very well.

To use your rice cooker as a steamer you will need to use the steamer basket that came with your rice cooker. That is what the metal thing with all the holes in it is for.

First place couple of cups of water in the bottom of the cooker pan... yes you still need to place the pan in the cooker... do not place water in the cooker without the bottom pan in place! Then place that metal basket on the top of the bottom pan and place your veggies in there. They can be either frozen, fresh, or thawed, it does not matter, but may affect your cooking times.

Then comes the good get to season your veggies with whatever it is that will make them taste even better! Salt, Pepper, and even a Teriyaki sauce will work well... but you can spice them up with minced onion, parsley, garlic powder or anything else you might think sounds good.

Then just place the lid on the top of the basket and turn the rice cooker on by pressing the cook or steam button. The cooker will heat up to produce steam. When the vegetables begin to soften, check them and turn off the cooker when they get to the softness that you desire. Do not over cook them as you will loose the flavor, and nutrients, that you are trying to preserve by using the steamer.

Once the veggies are done, some people enjoy melting butter, margarine, or other similar things on them to give them even more flavor.

Most of all enjoy those great veggies!!!
Can I pile up foods in a steamer. Will they still cook?

It's best to put steamer foods in a single layer so that they cook through in an even way. Sometimes it can't be helped and foods have to be layered.

How do I steam chicken in the steamer basket without it taking all day or tasting like rubber?

Rinse the chicken and pat it dry. If you are short on time then you can cut your chicken into smaller pieces. Place the steamer basket on top of a pot of water. It should be about half way full and the chicken shouldn't be immersed into the water but it's ok if it's touching a bit.

If you want to add to the flavor, you can add things to the water such as herbs, spice, lemon slices etc

Use a food thermometer to see when the chicken is cooked (it needs to reach at least 165 degrees).

Eat it fresh and hot with a salad or a starch like sweet potatoes.

I tried using a bamboo steamer but my food got stuck with the bottom of the bamboo tray. How do I avoid this?

The secret is to line the bottom of the bamboo steamer with lettuce or cabbage. This prevents it sticking. Make sure you put liquid over the food before you put it on top of the steamer pot.

Are you to fill the bottom of thepan with water. not the removable but the base pan.

Hello there:
if this has the steamer capability than the water is used to steam the food without touching it i have one and i have to do the same thing reason being is to let the water sit in the bottom and not actually touch the food ok?
i think the food comes out a lot more tender it takes longer to cook but well worth the wait.
best regards michael

Replacement basket for Black & Decker HS800 Flavor Scenter Rice Steamer

I would not recommend replacing just the plasic basket, too expensive. Once the plastic parts begin to fail, the uint has seen better days (our basket was still ok, but the unit started to leak out the bottom and the timer would stop during the steaming).

Bought a replacment B&D Handy Steamer, oval shape allows longer food items to be steamed (approx 10"x8"), water res & can be filler while steaming. Price was $25 in local hardware (Jan 09). Not worth fixing the old one IMO.
