could not make internet connection - took router to computer store to check it out - checked out fine / connected to internet ok. brought it home - still would not connect - borrowed a friend's router and it worked
at my house. so, it is not my computer or any problem with service provider. computer store will be closed for one week - need internet

- Sorory about being so vague - all this stuff floating around in my head doesn't help you guys! I'll give what info I have - I am not computer savy otherwise I could probably fix this problem myself!
OK I have a PC (running XP) - connected to internet (high speed -
DSL) using Intellinet ADSL2 + High Speed Router (wired). Computer store set me up with a router because sometimes guests use their laptop when they visit. Computer store set the
entire thing up for me - has been working for almost 2 years with NO problems. This week I tried to connect to internet - modem/router lights all came on as usual. My computer showed
"limited connectivity" - no webpages would display. Took modem to computer store - he connected to intenet using my modem.
Still would not work at my house. Borrowed a modem just like mine from someone & this modem DID connect to intenet at my house. Mar 17, 2009
- To bring you guys further up to date - I just took my modem to
work with me and guess what? It works there, too! It works
everywhere except at my house and other modems work at my
house. I even called another computer store in my town & although he didn't sell me the modem, he tried to help. He just
said he was scratching his head & puzzled at that.Mar 19, 2009
- I want to thank everyone for trying to help. I just think I am on the wrong forum - I need the "Computers for Dummies" forum. I don't even know what most of you are asking me! "Gateway subnet
DNS, dynamic or static IP address, and TCP/IP stack" sounds
like this to me: "do you *^$$() and also check the ((&#%&*#@" !!
So I guess I will resort back to a google search to see if there is
something I can de-code. Again, thanks for trying to help.
**I tried the last suggestion, but it did not change things - if I do find a solution, I would love to come back here and post it just
for info sake. ThanksMar 19, 2009
- Giving this one more try - I am at another computer store now - not the one I bought the router from, but this is a small town store & he is willing to help me. He just used my modem to connect to
the internet (same ISP as mine at home). Works fine.
kvgopi - thanks for suggestion, but he just checked & this does not appear to be the problem.
All is not lost however; the computer store guy just informed me of good news - my local phone service company (who also provides the internet service) got bought out last month & the new
company is giving away free modems! I don't have to buy another
one. Hope the new one works. If not, I may be back!Mar 24, 2009
- FINAL UPDATE - Got a new modem from my phone company and
it works great. Still was puzzled about old modem - tried a few things and I found the problem. The modem stayed on continuously at my house (where it would not work). I unplugged it and took it to work and to 2 computer stores (where it did work).
After being unplugged for 2 days, I hooked it back up at home and
it worked. But then it quit after it got hot. Took it to work and it
connected to internet fine there again - but after it got hot, it quit.
The modem was losing the connection after it got hot! Funny how
the most puzzling stuff seems so stupid after you get the answer!
Again, thanks for everyone's suggestions.

the only variable here is the home computer platform ie; home PC / laptop etc, are you sure the system has not been configured with a static addressing including gateway subnet DNS etc?..that would be teh first place I would look, if necessary just delete your TCP/IP stack and reinstall MAKE sure you have a copy of your Operating system before you do this)

Is the ip address given to your PC is dynamic or Static?

Kindly provide detailed information about your problem.
What type of router you are using and what is the ISP type ?

What type of router do you have?
Are you connected via cable, dial-up or DSL?
What other hardware are you using (Modem, switch, computer/laptop)?
I'd like to help but need more information on your setup.
