Go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\Accessibility\Narrator
remove the checks from:
Announce system events and the Read text option

How off narrator on HP laptop

In the bottom left hand of the screen, next to the round windows icon, in the empty search box, (assuming that you have Windows 7) type in narrator. You should then see a menu or result for narrator where you will find the option to turn narrator off.

How do I shut off talking navigator on windows 8

Here are a few things to try:
[WIN]+[ENTER] (seems to turn narrator on and off)
[CAPS LOCK] + [ESC] (Seems to turn off narrator)
Win 8.1: Control Panel > Optimize visual display (Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center > Make the Computer Easier to see) > uncheck "Turn on Narrator".

I accidentally turned on Windows Narrator using [win]+[enter], so my control panel didn't have the narrator box checked... which means going to control panel didn't turn it off. Finding those hotkeys came in very handy.
