Question about Garden

1 Answer

Lawnmowers I have an older model lawnmower. The id is worn off, so I can't provide the exact number. The starter pulley stops when I attempt to pull it. I removed the pulley assembly and cleaned/lubed it. It seems to be moving just fine - until I screw it back onto the housing. I am lining up the holes correctly. The blade moves by hand and I had removed the spark plug earlier to make sure it wasn't all gunked up. Any suggestions on what the issue is?

SOURCE: Cannot remove starter housing assembly on Sears Blower Vac

Take cover off were the belts are located. turn power button to off! see if the shaft can turn with a wrench. That should turn 180 degrees. If stuck you may need to forch it. Then try to pull cord.
Good luck

SOURCE: Toro lawnmower appears flooded and won't start.

Actually all you have to do is take out the spark plug and pull the engine through several times. What has happened is the intake valve was open when you tipped the motor so when the fuel ran out of the carb into the engine it saturated the spark plug. You may have to by another spark plug to get it started or dry yours out very well. The main thing is to make sure that most of the liquid gas has exited the cylinder.

One more thing.... the float needle may have tilted a bit in the seat as a result of haging it tipped on its side. This is going to sound a bit strange BUT... grasp the handle and alternately bang the front and rear wheels on the ground a couple of times by lifting the back of the mower with the handle about 2 inches and drop it. Do the same by pressing down on the handle for the front tires. (2 inches and drop)
IT WORKS!

This should get you going. IF not just respond here and we can continue troubleshooting.

SOURCE: Ran last year, won't start this year. Changed

It might have tipped over on its side. Look at the air filter, if you see oil or gas on the filter then you might have to remove and clean the carburetor. I would start by cleaning/replacing the air filter and trying it again. If its getting fuel and the spark plug works then the only other side of the fire triangle is air.

3-4 wraps around the pulley, and then the length to the handle.... adjust to maintain a slight tension on the cord by knotting the line in the handle. exact length changes from mower to mower.

Lawnmower leaks fuel from carb

It sounds as though your float and needle are stuck open or not closing properly, thus flooding with fuel. However it is hard to give exact fix/problem without a model number of the engine to be able to see the specs and design of the carb.

I have a Toro 16.5 riding lawnmower it stop and wouldn,t start back what could be my problem?

Battery charged? Bad fuel? Low on oil? 30w oil required. Clean carb. Check for improper ground on starting circuit. Ignition switch providing power to starter when key turned? Always use Stabile in gas. Remove bowl from carb ensure float is working properly. Float up no fuel flow, float down fuel flow. Ensure oil is full, low oil shutoff will not allow starting.

Pull cord jammed in the lawnmower

There could be several reasons for this problem, but sometimes it is in need of a simple cleaning. Remove the 3-4 nuts holding the starter assembly on the top of the engine. Normally you will use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove them. Turn the starter over in your hand so that you are looking at the starter pulley. Inspect the starter rope and make sure it isn't jammed between the starter pulley and the housing. If it is jammed, grab the starter rope and starter pulley and rotate them both together clockwise until the rope becomes unjammed. If the rope isn't jammed, turn the starter pulley counter clockwise gently. It will probably spring back and draw in the rope. If it retracts the rope slowly, spray WD40 around the bolt in the center of the pulley and work the pulley back and forth until the pulley frees up. If it doesn't free up or this isn't the problem, get back with me and I'll try and walk you through the rest of the repair.

Most time you don't have to get original parts like belts from the manufacturer. Suggest you go to a reputable lawn and tractor supply store where they can easily measure the belt and give you a comparable one for your machine. Hope this helps!

I have a Briggs & Stratton Sprint 3.75 hp lawnmower and it seems the cord is pulled almost all the way out and won't retract. How will i know if it is broken? or should I be able to wind it back up...

You should be able to Fix this yourself if your a fair garage tinkering mechanic. However...I need the engine and type number off of the engine to get you parts information. The spring is broken in your recoil. It is a matter of removing the air shroud, taking off the pulley / spool and changing the spring.
http://www.ehow.com/video_2328977_how-install-lawn-mower-starter.html

and how to tension the spring:
http://www.ehow.com/video_2328961_how-tension-lawn-mower-starter.html

There are 2 different types of springs used so having your engine model / type number is important so that you can get the right spring. One of the 2 part numbers is: 390066

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
