On the brother printers, the fuser is often attached to the toner (they come out as one piece). If you look at the old toner, you will probably notice that it is longer than the new one. The extra piece that makes is longer needs to be taken off of the old toner and attached to the new one.

try this
There's two ways to reset it
First: Soft Reset
1. Open front cover.
2. Hold down button located under LED's until all LED's
are lit.
3. Release button and make sure drum LED is off, then
4. Close cover
Second: Factory Reset
1. Turn the printer off.
2. Hold in the circular button on the front panel of the printer.
3. Turn the printer back on.
4. When the DRUM light is lit by itself let go of the button.
5. Hold in the circular button on the front panel again.
6. Once the Alarm light comes on, let go of the button.
This will perform a factory reset on the printer.
I hope that's everything you want.

Try this....
1: Turn off power and remove toner/drum
2: Tape the little spring loaded lever just inside the printer on the upper left hand side in the *DOWN* position! Do not replace drum yet and...
3: Turn power on to printer and let it cycle. Status/Toner lights will come on as usual.
4: Turn off printer, remove tape from lever, replace drum and turn back on.

There is a reset gear in the cartridge that needs to be "reset" or replaced. I've included a link to a PDF file that goes over the procedure to properly refill and reset the toner cartridge. This is a document that is used by a company that does a complete rebuild, so you probably won't need most of the information, just the part on resetting the reset gear.
