Craftsman DYS 4600 Deck Issue

I have a Craftsman DYS 4600 my dad and I just sharpened the blades on. My dad put them back on so I would not have to get in the floor. (I am in a wheelchair.) When I got onto the mower and fired it up, the blades would not come on. The engagement lever feels like it is stuck. I checked and the belt seems to be on all of the pulleys. What could be causing this?

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

With blades on and engine off reach under and wiggle each blade up and down. If you have excess play you will need bearings.

SOURCE: I have a Craftsman Mower and blades won't engage

Yes, that would make a difference. I have seen the pivot point get rusted and dirty to the point that they wouldn't tension the belt enough. Locate the bolt where it pivots and loosen it just a little, then see if the belt gets tight. It must be really tight when engaged almost like a fan belt on your car in order for it to work. I would also recommend that you take a close look at your belt. It could be burned and have a flat spot since it has apparently been slipping. A flat spot on the belt will cause major vibration when the blades are turning.

Ihave a craftsman ridding mower model #917.289900 new belt for the deck new blads it still leaves miss cut in the middle anybody know why?

usually if its missing cut it's not rotating fast enough, or the other thing it can be the blades have not been sharpened. some companies that make blades don't sharpen them so they can be handled, it will have a leading edge and you need a sharpening stone to put a cutting edge on the blade. and the blade has to be put in the right way round. flate top cutting edge bottom.

How do you change cutting blade on a Sears Craftsman Mower?

Hi Bill:
Changing blades is pretty straightforward but does involve some Safety Hazards.
- Blades can have sharp bits - WEAR GLOVES
- Running engines can make the blade BITE - BAD
ALWAYS disconnect spark plug lead whaen changing blade.
Easy Part:
- Raise deck to maximum height
- If possible, park with front wheels on a ramp to get better access under deck.
- Use socket wrench to remove bolt from centre of blade. Here's where the gloves help as you hold the end of the blade to prevent it from turning when you apply force to remove the bolt.
TA DA! The blade will come off.
- To install new or sharpened blade (I use an angle grinder to sharpen mine) tuck it in place, install the bolt, snug it up, make sure any notches or splines line up, protect your hands (gloves) while you tighten the bolt. and you're back to cutting grass.
Cheerfuls.

Blade still running after lever is disenagaged on Sears Craftsman LT2000 2010 riding mower.

the moveable arm that the blade engage pulley is attached to has a hole for a spring as well as the deck (or at least an attached immoveable bracket). spring goes there to bring the blades to a stop when putting the lever in the off possition.

Its a 21hp 46'' cut craftsman yts 3000 riding mower

Richard:

Check your blades to see if they are balanced. They should sit level when you put them on an arbor, (something pointy that you can put in the hole in the blade that will not go all the way through the hole. If the blade is heavy on one side you can grind or file the heavy end of the blade (I sharpen the blades and the heavy side gets extra sharpening to remove the excess weight on that side). Also check the spindles that you bolt the blades to when you install the blades. make sure that there is no slop in the spindles... they must not wobble. If they wobble, you didn't keep them greased. You'll have to but new spindles... they're not hard to install.

One blade on my Craftsman riding mower does not cut as good as the other one. It is a 42" deck. 05 model mower. I have sharpened the blades and balanced the deck. Could it be the spindle (mandrel)...

This may sound silly but, is your deck level? They often have adjustors 0n each side or possibly one of the deck hangers is not secured and one side of the deck is higher. Spindles vibrate like crazy if the bearings are worn. also spindle shafts will shake back and forth when you push the blade up or down..Disconnect the drive belt from the engine and spin the blades, they should spin easily and fairly quiet, if they squell loudly with a rubbing metal on metal sound replace them, it is fairly simple and not too expensive.

Mandrel chews pulley

Are you sure the spindle is not bent and also are you balancing the blades when sharpening. Other then that make sure bolts are tight on the mandrel. With the deck off and standing up spin the blades and watch center of balde to see if something is bent. Also watch pulley on the other side to see if its bent.
