Question about Poulan 38-Inch Steel Deck 15.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 5 Speed
I changed oil, filter, fuel filter, plugs, fuel punp, and it will run fine for awhile. Everything seems normal than the engine will sound like it is running out of gas or what the motor sounds like if you raise up from the seat. If I put the lever from forward to neutral the engine will come back to lfe again. I thought I could smell gas when it did. What the heck is going on?

The problem is the float needle and seat are leaking. It is not shutting off the gas when the bowl is full. The bowl fills up, then runs down the intake through the intake valve into cylinder, past the rings into the crankcase. Fairly common problem. Just replacing the rubber tipped needle probably will not stop the leak. The pressed-in brass seat needs to be pulled out and a new one pressed in also. Possibly there is some trash or rust in the carb that has gotten between the needle and seat, but in my experience, it usually takes replacing both to fix.

OK, so I had the same problem. Would not go into gear forward or in reverse. I took it apart and nothing seemed out of place or broken. I scratched my head for an hour... asked my wife if she had done anything to the machine while I was gone and she replied I only had a tire fixed!!! Bing bulb went off.... She had removed the tire from the shaft and had lost the SQUARE KEY for the drive shaft, one 20 cent square key for the drive shaft and it worked!! TA DAHHH!!
Simple fixes for simple problems.

It sounds like you have some debris or water in the carberator. You can drain the bowl easily depending on the style of carb. Most newer units take a 7/16 or 1/2 inch opened end wrench and just loosen the bowl bolt or valve whichever it might be until you get fuel or fluid flow. If there is water or other debris I recommend dumping the tank and flushing the fuel system with a good carb cleaner.
