Question about Maytag HAV2558 Top Load Washer
My machine was out of balance...I was doing a load and the there was a bad noise, then smoke was coming from the tank when I lifted the lid. I figured it was a belt since there was definitely a rubber smell-when the machine was opened, the belt was burnt on the gear-so I got a new belt. Then nothing would happen, so I thought it was the water pump. I put in a new water pump-first run through and the washer worked. I did a dance, but my joy was short- lived. The machine does not seem to agitate well, and now it won't drain-there is water in the tub. It fills, but does not drain...I tried to drain it again, but it won't, and I think I smell that old familiar rubber smell...could it be the plastic gear that the belt runs around? The belt seemed loose and the plate did not move easily. I hope it is not the transmission since a new part costs 269. I have already invested 68 for the pump and 28 for the belt-please help!

SOURCE: Burnt rubber smell
the belt is broken. the machine wont spin or agitate with a broken belt. set the timer to spin and the water should still drain. but not spin. belts are very cheap but replacing on could be tricky if you dont know what your doing

SOURCE: plastic pulley melting
Whatever the pulley is attached to has seized. Either the water pump or tub drive, or something else has stopped spinning. The belt continued to run because the motor kept pulling it, and the friction from the belt melted the plastic pulley. Hopefully its the water pump, as its the most inexpensive. You should change the belt along with this fix, it has also got hot and probable will not last as long as it should.

This sure sounds like a bad transmission. Turn the transmission by hand to feel and listen to it. It should be smooth and quiet.
