Question about Sony SDM-HS74P/S 17" LCD Monitor

Open Question

Sony SDM-HS74P monitor exhibits intermittent "posterization" effect

My Sony SDM-HS74P monitor has been exhibiting intermittent "posterization" effects which have progressively gotten longer and worse. Switching the panels front brightness setting to "LOW" seems to minimize the effect but there are still many light pixels. The "MIDDLE" "HIGH" or "USER" settings do not minimize the problem. Any suggestions as to the problem/correction would be appreciated. Thanks

SOURCE: MY SONY SDM-HS74P

You open the inverter unit and check any dry soldering is there. Some times dry joints inside the inverter unit cause this type of problems.

SOURCE: My Sony SDM-HS74P display does not stay on.

I have the same issue and wrote the monitor off for now after checking all cables (and a different computer). The logic circuitry and panel are sill ok as I can see a faint image with proper lighting and close inspection, but no backlight makes it useless.

Since there are 4 lamps (CCFLs) on this model, the problem likely is not there but on the inverter circuitry driving them. This does not look easy to replace as this is part of a bigger board.

It looks like some could repair by changing a few (or even one) component on the board, but unless your are used to this (de-soldering and soldering back), you are kind of stuck.

I will attempt this if I have time as I hate junking 99.9% ok hardware. In your case since this is an old monitor you should just replace it if not technically (on the electronics side) apt.

SOURCE: I have an sdm hs74p monitor that repeatedly blacks

You may not have problem with the caps, but check them out any way. You should get good caps such as PANASONIC FM or FC series from DIGIKEY.COM

If the monitor displays a similar effect on the monitor's own display, the colour ajustment or no signal display then the answer is most likely yes. A good tech guy may be able to fix the problem but it's going to cost almost the price of a smaller screen, similar to what you have, anyway. My suggestion is to just grab yourself a new monitor.
