Dell Dimension E520 Hard drive constantly buzzing

This could be a sign of a failing hard drive - I would backup all of your important documents immediately to an external drive to prevent you from losing any important data.

As you have already cleaned out the dust , there is a chance that one of the system fans (or the CPU fan) may be faulty or some wires inside your system case might be catching on the fan while it is spinning.

Disconnect all the system fans , so just the CPU fan is left plugged in and then switch on the system and see if the noise has stopped. Then plug each fan back in one at a time to identify if any of them are causing the noise.

Windows 7 refused to update. Windows 7 refuses to

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Connect a camera to your computer by using the camera's USB cable, and then turn on the camera.
    • Connect a portable device that contains pictures or videos to your computer by using the device's USB cable, and then turn on the device.
    • Insert a removable flash memory card, such as a Secure Digital (SD) or CompactFlash memory card into a memory card reader.
    • Connect a scanner to your computer by using a USB cable, and then turn on the scanner.
    • Insert a data CD or DVD that contains pictures or videos into your CD/DVD drive.
  2. In the AutoPlay dialog box that appears, click Import pictures and videos using Windows.
  3. To change the settings that are used when importing pictures and videos, click Import settings in the Import Pictures and Videos dialog box.
  4. Change one or more settings in the Import Settings dialog box, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK to restart Import Pictures and Videos. Type a tag in the Tag these pictures (optional) box, and then clickImport to import your pictures and videos using the new settings.

For updates make sure that the time and date are correct, if it doesn't match what time it actually is , it wont update, and make sure your OS has been activated

My Dell Dimension 5150 has always had a loud fan but it has gotten significantly worse over the past two weeks. It now sounds like I am at the World Cup! I believe I have traced the noise to the fan in...

No. You can take apart the power supply, detach the fan, clean it, clean the power supply(capacitors, core), put it together and see if it makes the same sound.
Also check the fan of the CPU cooler, you may have to clean that too. But be careful when you remove the cooler from the CPU. You will need silica paste to protect the core of the processor. You can find it in small 5 grams packs. Clean the back of the cooler and the processor with some medicinal alcohol, let them dry and then put them back. Do not forget about the paste. It is a very important component in order to keep the processor at a decent temperature.
Also check if the graphics card has a fan. If so, clean it too.
Put everything back and it should work perfectly.
If you need further assistance, or have further questions, just leave a comment. Thank you for using FixYa. Cheers

My mother has a dell dimension 8200 and it wont turn on. my step-father said he took one of her fans for his computer (they're seperated) but i dont know which one. I want to replace it, but i dont know...

There are several fans that your step-father could have taken from your pc. They could be the two cooling fans, one at the rear or one at the front of the pc. However, there is one very important fan that could have been removed and that is the fan that sits directly above the processor or cpu, central processing unit. If this has been removed then it's likely that your computer wouldn't boot as the processor needs to be kept cool when operational. You could look inside your pc. Lay it on its side and remove the side panel, if you have screws then these would be located at the rear of the pc. If you do this, make sure everything is disonnected and most importantly, when you have removed the side panel, don't touch anything inside the pc as this can be dangerous to your computer. Just look inside and you should see a raised heatsink, this is a big piece of square metal with fins and the fan sits on top of this. This is the most likely reason if this has been removed why your computer won't start or boot up. Whilst looking inside, try to locate any other fans at the front or rear of the pc. The processor needs to be kept cool at all times. You can purchase individual fans but you would need to purchase one that is compatible with the heatsink you have sitting above the processor. Remember don't physically touch anything inside whilst you are checking out the situation. Your best bet is to check out your step-dad's system and let him show you the fan he removed, you can then order a replacement part online, get the model number from the fan etc. Good luck. Andrew

Power supply fan runs at increasing high speeds as soon as the power cord is plugged in. PC not booted up when it does this.

Generic response.

As I understand your question, your fan is tunning when your computer is off or asleep or hybernating. This is only a llittle unusual ...

Bear with me ...

Many fans in modern computers adjust their speed to meet the needs of the computer. They slow down when there is not a lot of heat and speed up with there is increased heat.

It is very important that you not disrupt the air flow within a computer bu leaving the side cover off, for example.

If heat is a problem in your situation, you can probably add a second fan to the back of your computer.

Very important that your computer can breathe. You May want to check inside for dust and lint. clean with care- Static electricity KILLS delicate circuits.

I need printed instructions on how to install Dell Dimension 4600c power supply. I ordered the part but it came with no instructions.

Power Supply Removing the Power Supply caution.gif CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in your Owner's Manual or Product Information Guide. caution.gif CAUTION: To guard against electrical shock, always unplug your computer from the electrical outlet before removing the cover.
  1. Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin."

  2. Remove the fan assembly.

  3. Disconnect the AC power cable from the AC power connector on the back of the power supply.

  4. Unplug the DC power cables from the drives and system board.

  5. Remove the four screws that secure the power supply to the back of the computer.
OR

As you add more devices to your Dell Dimension 4600 desktop, it is important to ensure there is enough electrical power being fed to the components. While the 250 Watt power supply that comes standard with the Dell Dimension 4600 is acceptable at stock settings, it is almost certainly not capable of providing power for many more devices such as graphics cardsmag-glass_10x10.gif and multiple hard drives. If you add such devices, you also should upgrade your Dell Dimension 4600 power supply.

Yellow light flashes and Fan doesnt start

I think it may be a problem with the motherboard cause the power light should be green from what I remember. The fan isn't even turning on either which is very suspicious. Try another power supply if you have one handy and if that fails then the motherboard is bad. Even if your fan was bad, you would normally get video anyway before a warning message about the fan would come up.
