Hello...I used to fix projectors for several years...the problem you describe sounds suspiciously like a dead cooling fan--or more to the point, a fan might not be putting out a signal pulse telling the main board that it's running. (most of the fans in the unit will have 3 leads--red for positive, black for negative(ground), and a yellow one for sending out signal pulses) When you turn on the projector, it goes through a quick self test (you aren't aware of this) and if everything comes up roses, the lamp kicks in and you have a display. In case of any kind of error, the internal instructions tell the main board to immediately shut down, preventing damage.
Also, there might be a ballast problem( the circuit that provides power to the lamp) If you have a known-good lamp, put it in...if the same thing happens, most likely its the ballast that's blown out. The ballast fires a jolt of electricity like a spark plug to initially start the lamp burning. Then, it auto switches to a very low voltage with a *lot* of current(sort of like a welder's arc). After so much usage, the ballast gets weakened and eventually fails. Hope I helped...Rick

SOURCE: I have a Hitachi LCD
The setup is not correct. Check the requirements of the projector, (size, refresh rates etc.) and set the laptop up accordingly.
You will se the XP Screen because the laptop hasn't loaded any drivers yet and the screen is low resolution.
Hope that helps.
