Question about Cameras

Open Question

Is a stuck zoom ring on a EF 80-200 f 2.8 canon ( magic drainpipe) common? Is it repairable and what type of $ will I be looking at?

The zoom ring had a stutter to it intermittently and it suddenly is stuck at 100mm. And ideas/advise?

SOURCE: barrel slides

A fat rubber band tight enough to stop the barrel movement, but not so tight it restricts manual zooming is the best, extremely effective, low-tech fix for this problem - I have done it for years

SOURCE: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 Repair Manual

Mine had the same problem. The electric flexible wire that links to the moving aperture motor in the center is most likely broken, causing the aperture to stop reopen after a shot. this could be proved if you feel something touching inside when zoom. (that is caused by the loose flexible wire, if so do not zoom anymore, you could further damage the wire) It need to be replaced and this requires the complete disassmebly of the lens. I repaired mine myself by adding a thin wire, took me more than 10 hours in total (first tear it apert, pin point the problem, then think of a solution because I did not have the parts for repair, then finally repaired it). If you have never done lens/electronic repair before, don't do that, too many tricks that could lead to further damage.

SOURCE: Quantaray 28-90 for Nikon N65 zoom ring locked up

There is no secret locking switch. If a little gentle jiggling doesn't free the zoom ring, then I can only suggest you take it in to a reputable camera shop for a Clean-Lubricate-Adjust (CLA).

Why does the focusing ring on the efs 55-250mm not retract all the way when you turn the camera off

I doesn't return to it's closed position when the camera is turned off. You have to do it manually . Turn the zoom ring to the 55 position then turn the front focus ring fully to the left.

I bought Canon EF 75-300mm III Zoom Lens, but the len is very loose, is it problem

Long and short of it...if the photos are close to "decent", dont worry bout it :) It aint no L Lens but can still throw out a good pic every now n then. Tip it from one end to the other whilst holding it...if you hear something go \'ring-a-chicka-chink-chink-clunk\', then youve got problems, otherwise grin and bear the looseness - mine lasted 6 years of hard yacker before i dropped it in the drink!

MY CANON EF 100-400MM USM LENS WON'T ZOOM PAST 150MM

Is the lens tension adjusting ring too tight? Try loosening it and see if you get increased travel. If so, you may need to have it checked out.

Canon Extender EF 2x II

There are 2 Canon fittings, EF for all EOS cameras and EF-S for 'crop' cameras. The Canon extender does not fit crop cameras. Whichever make you look at, make sure it will fit the type of mount you have.
If you have not yet bought your lens of choice, Sigma are good and do their own extender compatible with their own lenses but not Canon's. This may be a good option for you

The zoom creep is an easy fix for Canon. I really do not recommend trying to tighten it yourself, since that would void your warranty.
It is usually free to tighten the zoom ring.

Zoom ring on 18-55 mm lens is locked/stuck

Are you sure it's the zoom ring that's stuck, and not the focus ring? The focus ring doesn't move when the camera is in autofocus.
If it's indeed the zoom ring that's stuck, you can spend more money than the lens is worth in repairs, or buy a replacement (circa 35 dollars on ebay) for dreadfully cheap. Good luck.
