Question about Dyson Vacuums

Beater bar not working - no variable suction

When I am using the vacuum, the beater bar does not seem to be working. I have cleaned all debri (hair, dust, fuzz, string) but it still doesn't roll when I move the vacuum back & forth. Also, the two switches to change the suction from carpet to tile/linoleum suction have no variance. There used to be a distinct sound when you changed from one switch to the other. What do you suggest?

Take it to your local vac shop for repair. Depending on what model you have, it may have a bad switch or you brushroll ends could have failed. Both are common issues.

SOURCE: beater bar on Dyson upright won't turn when handle is lowered

I have finally fixed my sister's dyson dc 15 beater bar problem. It was just 2 tiny broken wires connect to circuit board lead to the beater bar. The wires broke where they go through the black rubber gommet. You need a torx screwdriver tx 15 to remove 2 plastic covers to access the wires. When looking at the front of the vacuum, the gray covers located on the right side of the vacuum. 1 big cover with a black rubber gasket and other small gray cover is on the rotating ball area.
This my new year resolution is to warn people not to buy Dyson vacuum cleaner ( Junk) design to break down! Shame on you Dyson!!!! Save your money find good old vacuum cleaner with metal parts.

OLD IS IN NEW IS JUNK!

Happy New Year!

SOURCE: Suction loss when handle is tipped back to clean carpet

Ours did the same thing. I cleaned the filter and canister thoroughly. It needed to be cleaned, but that didn't fix the problem. I removed the plate under the carpet brush bar (three quarter-turn screws) and removed all hair, lint and threads from the rollers and brush. THEN my husband found the real problem: a piece of flexible hose running from the head into the hose (on the left side when behind the vacuum) was completely clogged. The hose will detach from the head, and you can remove debris. Once that clog was removed, the hose easily re-attaches, and we had great suction once again.

When I use the vacuum it smells like something burning but it does work. How do I fix this? Thank you Sharon Post

Hi ssharonxxx...

Sounds like you have hair, strings, debris caught on the beater bar and it is causing the belt to burn on the beater bar or motor.
Remove the bottom of your vacuum and clean, oil and replace the beater bar, that should solve your burning smell problem.

Beater bar not working. suction not working

Check for a broken beater brush belt. Clean the beater brush, clear of all debris and add some WD40 at each end where the rubber holders are. Turn beater brush by hand to work the WD40 into the axle. Reassemble making sure the belt is on correctly. This should also help solve the suction problem as well.

Hi the suction on my dyson hoover has gone very poor. I have cleaned all filters but suction is still pretty poor.Is there anything else i can do?

your problem with Dyson is the reason why a lot of them end up in the trash. here is the link to an article that will help you locate the cat fur, or hair or other debris that is lurking inside your machine and causing you to loose suction

Low suction

Hi, You can take care of both things at once. Here's how:
Unplug and flip your vacuum over, beater bar side up. Remove the cover base plate that surrounds your beater bar. It's held on with either clips or screws, and usually "hinges" toward the front of the vacuum to release when the clips/screws are undone. Remove the base plate. The beater bar sits in sockets where it fits into the vacuum. Pay particular attention to how it comes out as you remove the beater bar, so it will be much easier to put it back together. If your belt is good, it will want to come off with the beater bar, but will remain attached to the motor. If necessary, slip the belt off of the beater bar. Behind the beater bar, you'll see a cavity. This is where the vacuum pulls the dirt from the beater bar. Look up into the cavity; stuff almost always hangs up in there. Remove any debris that you can find. While you have your beater bar out, look at the ends, where it fits into the sockets. Hair and other material catches on the beater bar and winds around it. If it is in and around the sockets, it causes the vacuum to have to work harder to clean. Remove any debris that you find on either end. Get your new belt and place it on the motor shaft. Slip the beater bar into the belt, and install the beater bar and sockets back into the vacuum frame. It takes patience so don't worry if it takes a few tries to get it right. Once in, test your work by revolving the beater bar a bit with your hand. You should be able to feel the tension of the belt as it turns the bar and the motor shaft. Take one more look at the sockets, just to be sure that they are in the proper place, and that the beater bar is level in the frame. Reinstall the base plate. This should have you finished at this end.

It has no suction...

Assuming that the vacuum will run, remove the bag and check the discharge to the bag from the machine for debris. Also check the suction to the vacuum blower by removing the beater bar cover plate and beater bar. Inspect the belt. While the bar is off, inspect the suction hose behind the beater bar. This is where I usually find the debris.

The brush rotates on my dyson slim but there is no suction. though there is suction from the hose... has anyone any ideas????

Un-plug the machine first. Turn the unit over and remove the bottom plate. Check for and remove any debris in, around, or behind the beater bar assembly. While you're in there, look at the beater bar ends where the bearings sit. and clean any debris, hair, etc, from those areas as well.

DC07 works with the hose - but not when upright

Check the actual brush bar is moving. If it is then there's definately a clog and it could well be behind the beater bar. If you can remove the sole plate (which is the grid in front of the beater bar) then undo it and check dirt behind the beater bar, belt and main dust channel. Also check the main inspection air ways and if the beater bar is clogged with hair, clean it off.

The beater won't turn

Un-plug the vacuum.

Turn the vacuum cleaner over and pop off or unscrew the bottom plate. The most common things are broken belt, clogged beater bar (usually hair), bad beater bar bearings, or the beater bar and belt is just plain worn out and needs replacing. If the brush nubs are very worn, replacing the belt alone won't help much.

Clean as much debris, hair etc as possible out of the unit. If you have a can of air like the type used to clean computer key boards, blow out the area and the motor if possible. Do this in a ventilated area or somewhere where it will not mess up your house.
